major utter complete epic fail reposted
This was posted on the XTA forum. Peet wants to censor everything todo with the debacle and pretend it never happened. I gave him 2 choices. Keep the post and I might make a few modifications and a post explaining how angry I was at the whole thing, or delete the post and have it reposted in the spring forum or somewhere else. He chose the latter.
==================================
OK.
I have never felt so enraged or angered by a simple mod. Never so shocked at the level of sheer incompetence in such a simple release procedure.
XTA v9
XTA V9
XTA GOLD 0.1
XTA 9
wtf
and again:
XTAPE.sdz
XTAPE.sd7
XTAv9.sdz
XTAV9.sdz
and again:
on UF:
XTA v9
XTA v9
XTA v9
I spent a week trying to figure out which was the latest one, and why when pointed to the latest version, after redownloading I was still not shown as synced in the lobby.
Has nobody here heard of incrementing version numbers? Or always using the same system? The same filename?
But somebody did change the version name, but they didnt increment it, instead they just changed V to a v. *_*. WTF.
You guys are all "We gotta take back the userbase! People will desert BA and goto CA and we want them to come back to XTA too! What can we do to make XTA more popular?!?! Why is BA more popular?"
"XTA 9 will change everything"
And indeed it has. XTA v9 is the worst disaster XTA could face imo. And its all 100% preventable. There's nothing wrong with the mod itself, infact its quite good. IMO its one of the greatest versions ever released, but you all cocked it up big time in its release.
Right now you're all pretending GOLD never existed and insisting there was only ever 1 single version. Right now there's XTA V9 and XTA v9 floating around, along with XTA beta versions. Some of these beta versions break the sync. V9 and v9 have the same names save for capitalisation which also introduces sync errors and the lobby treats them like the same mod. The lobby cant distinguish between the two.
Whatsmore, the copies on UF dont tell the user which is the newest. They're not part of any groups so there're no 'this file isnt the latest' update messages pointing to the proper version.
This is a great big mess and everyone seems oblivious to it.
This whole setup needs a gigantic kick up the back side. CA is going to tear XTA limb from limb and leave a great big tangled mess of flesh and guts. CA has already leeched all the fancy new models we've ignored.
They've got all the lua widgets and the lua coders, and the new solar model and so on. They have a website, and rather than bicker for ages about it, they bought a domain, got hosting set up trac, and got to work, they didnt argue about a nonexistant wbsite, they got what they needed and continued as they went.
They have a release system, with Quantum in charge, 1 person in charge of releases, a set procedure on version numbers of names, a commit bot, a well populated channel that they actually chat in rather than a ragtag group who dont speak because all the real chatting was leeched out into channels like #peet for no real reason. They're highly organised, they can be seen to make progress, users can see them moving forward day by day in realtime.
Most XTA progress is unseen and unnoticed. Most changes are small explosion updates and minor tweaks to the same few units. So what if XTA 9 sea is totally rebalanced, nobody will notice! They never knew sea well enough to begin with, and sea has always been and still is chugging up the economic ladder at a snails pace. The only real difference now is the commander models, the explosions from firing sfx at lvl 1 units, and the numerous lights that've been added. Other than that most users wont notice.
Its not even apaprent as to where the XTA svn is or if there even is one.
This mods days are numbered unless something is done.
Right now you have XTA V9 and XTA v9 floating around.
I suggest an XTA 9.1 immediatly to be released as soon as possible along with a push for tobi to release an 0.75b3 when he returns from holiday. Spring releases are far easier nowadays, mainly thanks to the efforts of tobi himself. 0.75b1 was a buildbot built installer all fully automated.
I would also suggest a nanoturret mutator and a deployment mutator (hint CA svn hint), aswell a changing the nanosfx light particle texture from green to grayscale as I keep suggesting to fix the team coloured nanospray, and a re-ordering of the lvl 2 build menus.

I expressed my opinions.
You censored them, also noting that you'd done the same to other people.
I reposted them elsewhere.
So you kicked me from your channels, locked them, and used /ignore in the lobby.
I think its quite simple whats happened. You've censored people. One of them reposted elsewhere. You started acting all childish and lashed out however you could.
So I think its best you quit the crap and start acting in the best interests of XTA.

[01:41:18 AM] <Peet> ive already removed it from the xta forum
[01:41:21 AM] <lurker[]> make a lua button?
[01:41:52 AM] <lurker[]> it's probably hardcoded[01:45:07 AM] <[]AF> reposted
[01:46:07 AM] <[]AF> censoring messups doesnt make a forum pretty, it incites low level resentment that resurfaces in the future weeks or months later, and confuses new posters
[01:46:32 AM] <Peet> for fucks sake af, i wasnt trying to censor you
[01:46:43 AM] <[]AF> thats exactly what you did
[01:46:45 AM] <Peet> !kick []AF epic fuckwittedness
[01:46:45 AM] * Channel message: <ChanServ> has kicked <[]AF> from the channel (reason: epic fuckwittedness)
[01:46:45 AM] * You have been kicked from #peet by <ChanServ> (epic fuckwittedness)
All I asked you to do af, is tone down the attacking in your post, I even copied it into a text file to send you, so that you wouldn't have to rewrite it from scratch. That is it. That is what I have done to other people, that is what I shall continue to do, I no longer care whether you realize this or not, because you have little to no credibility with a large number of people as it is. I will ignore the personal attacks for the time being, but to be completely honest, I hold no desire to deal with you any more.
You had your chance, I did say I would make a second post in the thread toning it down with the odd edit to the original post which is essentially what you asked of me but it wasnt enough and instead you decided to attack me personally in the lobby and ban me from the XTA forums. You have been banned from this forum.
Please contact the webmaster or board administrator for more information.
There's no need to be so petty and childish because I reposted something elsewhere after I was censored after recieving several tactless msn messages.
Er, whoa! Calm down... take deep breaths.
On the one hand, XTA's developers need to keep much more careful track of their versions. That's bad for players, and makes them look bad. KK, we can all agree that that's a mistake.
On the other hand, escalating this and turning it into a CA vs. XTA thing is pointless. Yes, XTA's development team might be a bit more organized, yes, they've made a goof here, yes CA's doing some interesting things with LUA, and I have seen that they're happily using a lot of FX stuff, like XTA is, and I think that's all great for everybody, frankly. If CA turns out to be a better mod, gameplay-wise, then that will resolve itself fairly quickly in terms of who plays what. In a totally free market, where everybody plays what they like, it's just that simple, and there's no point in fighting about it.
If the XTA guys want their mod to really become more popular, they should probably reflect a little more on why XTA has almost always been in the shadows. Personally speaking, I think it's because of its gameplay, which has never gotten more interesting, rather than anything in particular about their development processes. But that's just my opinion.

My point was that its because CA progress is ongoing and highly visible and organised and automated. They have a domain and a functional website, a channel packed full of people thats usually got an ongoing discussion, commit bots posting in there and in #news, and they're not afraid to add or experiment, prefering to make variants with anything they're unsure.
Whereas XTA development is somewhat unclear and murky. Wheres the XTA SVN? Does XTA have an svn? Whats the latest XTA version? Who is in charge of deciding when its released? Whats the version numbering scheme? Whats stopping an outsider taking the XTA work in progress and releasing it as XTA 9.1 right here and now? Whats the plan for the future?
XTA development cannot continue as it is. There's a lack of communication about a lot of stuff. Threads starting with should I add this? and ending with, stuff like 'oh the next XTAs been released'.
Confusion over version numbers is even worse, and possibly disastrous. To censor all traces of it repeatedly then act like this when they repost it is not healthy behaviour.
You're supposed to learn from your past mistakes. Hiding them and censoring them then excommunicating those who mentioned it is not good practice.
Indeed if you read what I reposted youll see there are elements that the XTA people arent aware of that my post was supposed to highlight, things that even most modders dont know such as how XTA V9 people can join XTA v9 games but tasclient gives the wrong hash and they arent synced. Or the Unknown Files mistake with update groups not being used. The lack of help on offer to new users who had fallen into these traps. The failure to even acknowledge that errors had been made at all.
No development process is perfect. But when you start to involve personal matters and censor your mistakes instead of discussing and learning from them, you lower yourself and your fellow contributors.

Im very shocked that a person with forum stats like these
lol
As uve shown ur "rage" with our mod i would be VERY happy to have u hand over the #XTA chan to some one with a more pro-active approach. Give it to Trenchor he talks more about balance than u do
Gold did exist, dont put words in my mouth like u even talked to me about it and know what im thinking, ur obviously very emotional right now. Put on a big fluffy jumper watch a cute film n eat some chocolate.
I created that version in an attempt to obviously unite the dev builds to a solid stable version. Which also had a sub dev build at the end. Myg pumped out the v9 that is the "latest" despite the discussion's in the xta chan. People do talk in xta chan, thats a prime example; yes we also talk in #Peet, leave that chan out of ur flame war plz. If we want to talk in there as well its anybodys choice to do so.
If you complain about the lvl 2 build menus, heres an idea. Take that tampon out of ur arse and do something apart from bitching. i cba to quote u from diff forum but im sure ive told u b4 if u want it done so badly feel free to do it urself and submit ur work to Noruas.
Poor old noruas is doing the mod almost totally by himself, ive pulled back from the dev coz i have rl stuff. you havent done anything to help him out, obviously ur very busy urself; or just prefer to complain rather than do anything about it. If its the first one, WHY dont u understand not every body has the time to adjust build menus that were all accustomed to already?
erm, try reading ur own chan topic ffs lolz
Nano turrets....dude i asked for a scout mutator but it never got through. Itd not what what YOU want that makes it in, neither is it just me. The mod is made for the general wishes and not some gob-shite who obviously knows frak all what he is talking about.
Take ur drama and stick it somewhere else, no wonder Peet cut this "OW NOES WORST EVER" emo! out, ur full of 5#17. Cut out the crappy bull and get to the facts, u dont like the version name and no one in xta takes u seriously.
The mod was renamed poorly i definitely agree, but the correct mod link is in the #XTA chan, you know...the one u run...erm or just kick people out of when they get on ur tits lol and then sit there with a crown on ur head feeling important and yet doing nothing for the community..
If you find a bug, help fix it.
If you got an idea, help build it.
If you think modders have time to run around picking the rattle off the floor for a screaming little girl who obviously cba to even look at the work done; let alone appreciate it your very mistaken.
::EDIT:: Added+
Ive taken out #XTA from my perform list untill some one who knows xta and is a willing poster or corcontributor of work [i.e active member of the community, who doesnt have the mind state of a mind similar to that of a thing that bleeds for 4 days and doesnt die]

Gizmo, I am operator of #xta, I set in there quite a lot, and the amount of chat in there pails in comaprison to that of #ca. That was my point, plain and simple.
And the majority of posts on the XTA forum are made by a group of 20 or so people, 'the XTA Pros', on the Pro side of the Noob Pro divide as many on the XTA forum put it.
And indeed I do have copies of test builds of XTA were I amde changes that I've been suggesting but had no idea to who or where to submit them. XTA development carried on I abandoned the chnges because they kept drifting further and further behind in the development process. But I think its fair to say that when I say something I mean it as a suggestion not a command and it should be considered as such.
And just because I dont talk about balance 24/7 doesnt mean I havent got things to say. Infact I dont think that much needs changing with regards to balance. My comment on nanoturrets was with regards to the BA divide. But since nobody acknowledged that I'd even made any suggestion at all I didnt do it. Afterall why contribute something if everybody ignores you when you suggest it?
And yes I have tried to help. For almost 2 years I and lindir singlehandedly sorted out AI for you lot with our only request being that you add a single tag to a single file.
We've all put our fair share into it, and never did I say that the people in the XTA forum do nothing, but dont pretend I know nothing and that I've done nothing. Just because I havent got a 60 page thread in this forum filled with screenshots of some long forgotten mod, or that I havent made a model, textured it, then paraded it to everyone, doesnt mean that I'm clueless when it comes to anything but lobbies and AI.
As I said in my repost, XTA is the best version released in a long time. It was the release process and the lack of communication that lead to this whole disaster. Did you not see how I went and redownloaded from the XTA channel topic repeatedly and saw how I still had bad sync?
Please wait untill you've calmed down and peets stopped spilling the poison backstabbing before you reply.

Dont you dare imply that I said this to insult ivoryking. He did good work there with his rebalance, but face it, all the people on the other side of the noob/pro divide simply didnt get to grips with sea enough to remember that once upon a time it was a very different ballgame. How could they?!?! The vast majority of players have already gone to BA before they have a sea battle of any kind.XTA 9 sea is totally rebalanced, nobody will notice!

Or you could even try asking in the chan?.....just an idea.....
BULL! Chojin went off n wrote an ai config as well as, just to keep you quiet. DO NOT bring that back up again, i cannot be doing with any trolling. And yes I have tried to help. For those of us who do play the game alot, everything is important. What would happen if a player did get introduced to a sea map early & liked sea enough to stay in xta?
Ow yes, big factor here, the new sea is more fun, that is after all, what the mod is about. It was done for everybody, and we would not ignore a lesser part of the mod that could be improved for FUN. There are hundreds of sea maps, do you think people who play sea maps only use BA?
Infact I dont think that much needs changing with regards to balance.
Code: Select all
but you all cocked it up big time.
Peet spilling poison? ow please u have done this public embarrassment to yourself! Please wait untill you've calmed down and peets stopped spilling the poison backstabbing before you reply.
What have you done to upset him, another temper tantrum perhaps? Im getting out of here before i loose mine lol
Thats it for me in here, i dont like emo, i trust ur not going to chase after me & PM me telling me to stop annoying you like you did Trenchor. Dont worry about having to ban me in #xta either, im not setting foot in there until your rights are revoked and someone with heart assumes control.
Despite the fact that I wanted to step away from dealing with you whatsoever, I feel I have to defend myself from your numerous personal attacks. You broke one of the very first rules I wrote for that forum. I deleted the post, handed it to you, and asked you to modify it to not attack the xta developers as you had. You refused, started ranting about me censoring you, and decided to post it here instead. I banned you because you refused to cooperate with my moderation.
I kicked you out of my channels (note: the channels that are 100% mine (#peet and #simbase, not ones that I just have op in, such as #moddev and #scce.) because you started rambling your nonsense about censorship in #peet, and then I /ignore'd because I knew you would continue to do the same in PM if I had not.
Oh, and why are you so batshit about XTA all of a sudden? roughly 3/4 of the games I see you in are BA, which just so happens to be XTA's main rival.
And on another side note, you act as if I was defending the xta developers as if I were one of them? Despite contributing considerably more than you have, I have done little other than maintain the xta forum over the last few months. You, on the other hand, maintain your seat of power in #xta for god knows what reason, and play BA as soon as all the other xta players have gone to bed.

Stop twisting my words. I dont pretend to know the ins and outs of XTA development down to who wrote every character in every file. Nor did I say XTA itself was bad. My problem in my post was with the way it was released, not the content itself. You dont seem to get this and neither does Peet.
And I do know noruas had stuff todo with the sea rebalance. It was noruas who gave me the dl link to the XTA 9 sea edition test. I mentioned ivoryking because he came to mind, and because it was he who started the ball rolling. But I didnt intend to give a full contributors list and spend several hours writting out who did what.
If a player did get introduced to a sea map early and liked it enough to stay with XTA then obviously my comment doesnt apply because my comment is talking about that vast majority who play BA.
But over the months XTA has become less popular, and if I played XTA exclusively I would be playing perhaps once or twice every few days, choosing to miss the regular chain with the people who go in the XTA forum because it clashes with that time were I go to see my family, watch the soaps, make my dinner, etc.
So yes I do play BA when the XTA regulars have gone to bed. Not because I'm hiding it from them, but because when the regulars goto bed, thats it, there are no more games so there's nothing but BA to play. And peet if you'd entered the games yourself you'd see most of the time I just spectate. But wether I play BA at all is none of your business. I dont hide the fact I play mods other than BA, and I can play what i want when I want.
And peet, I did say 3 lines about why censor ship was bad very quickly in #peet before going to check my mail but then the notifier thing popped up and I saw you'd kicked me from your channels. As I see it I couldnt have ranted, I didnt have the chance to really rant at all, and if I did want to rant it'd have been very different. But then again you've always been opposed to me being in charge of #xta, and you've gotten more resentful over it as I've unnopped you from my bots and finally my channels then #xta itself for misuse and abuse. And you've accused me of a lot that you've done in the last 5 hours.

I don't read the XTA forums, but from the posts in this thread, AF seems to to have the stronger position.Peet wrote:All I asked you to do af, is tone down the attacking in your post, I even copied it into a text file to send you, so that you wouldn't have to rewrite it from scratch. That is it. That is what I have done to other people, that is what I shall continue to do, I no longer care whether you realize this or not, because you have little to no credibility with a large number of people as it is. I will ignore the personal attacks for the time being, but to be completely honest, I hold no desire to deal with you any more.
His post really didn't need to be toned, down, certainly not as much as some of the responses. His points aren't ad hominems, they are real and significant problems. They shouldn't be dismissed or ignored. Real problems should be dealt with quickly, thoroughly, and cheerfully.
This version of XTA isn't bad by any means, but we haven't had a really clean release of XTA since 7. Problems have been consistent since then.
Oh, I do agree that they're valid problems. The issue here is AF going batshit when I asked him to tone down the post, simply because I desire for the xta forum to remain a constructive atmosphere.
