dirt as a resource; terraforming

Post by samoht70 »

Would it be realistic to implement a terraforming tool in Spring? I know Spring supports ground deformation both through explosions and via limited ground-leveling to place structures. Something as simple as trenches for classic WWI-style warfare could be a neat feature. However, adding a trench to the construction list that wouldn't act like a structure or unit could be a challenge. This is probably beyond the limits of mere modding.

Dirt could be a nifty 3rd resource, used for making fortifications. Cut out some dirt to make a trench, and it's added to your dirt resource. Then, it can be deposited to build quick berms for cover out on the battlefield. A pile of dirt would be more durable than a wall, and a more effective barrier against long-range fire, but would not be a barrier to ground forces. With a ridiculous expenditure of resources, an entire mountain could be moved or leveled, an island built, and a waterway filled.

Adding resources would be difficult by itself, but is it within the limits of the game engine to terraform?

Raise, Lower, and flatten = win.

But leave it up to a special unit, instead of being globally applied to all Con units and it will be fairly balanced as a test.

Don't even argue that it wouldn't be cool.
