BA SUCKS! (stop the wiki vandalization)

Post by smoth »

ok, since the ba sucks bit had to get your attention..

ok guys, look, the situation is simple, the way noobs in spring get help is through the wiki, this means that the current vandalization of our wiki HAS TO STOP! It is terribly important, please someone put a stop to the vandalization. It is really time consuming to fix the current one and patroll it. So please SOMEONE WITH THE ABILITY TO STOP IT! PLEASE lock new users until there is a solution to the wiki bots!!!!

My immediate solution would be to prevent new wiki users registering.

But then I realized I have no admin access todo that and I'm just a regular wiki user.....

How, then, would any new person be able to contribute?

This site can not be the first one to get spammed, someone has surely figured out good solutions for it.

how about letting people to use the same account they do have on the forums?

spam-protection seems to be working good here

just allow to edit the wiki after like 1-2 posts on the forums

people could always post crap in the offtopic section, just to get access

We've been through this, the wiki needs to be disabled NOW because we have a repair backlog to make, and nobody can decide what long term solution to implement. We are not going to debate it again.

The long term solution can be discussed when the current run of damage is halted.

I mailed Fnordia about this today but I don't know if he is on-line atm.

I just tryed to put the wiki on read only myself, but I don't have write access to the production (this, the active) site so I can't put the wiki on read-only in a clean way.. I don't know if others have write access, I just mailed Tobi about this.

Maybe I can escalate my database rights with the account the site uses but I really dislike that option as it would be a VERY unclean fix. I would have to rename the wiki tables (*if* I can indeed do that with that account) and that would bring down the wiki. Fnordia would have to be on vacation or something like that before I'm going to try that and only when Tobi agrees.

Anyway, I presume Fnordia will pop up and fix the problem I just write about my options so you guy's know that I like to fix this but that we need to find a good way to do this.

All you have todo is disable registrations. Life will go on as normal untill the things secured and registrations are opened again.

There are two steps:
1) Immediate: First, we stop the ongoing destruction with an harsh but effective method
2) Long term: Then, we have time to discuss and debate which finer method to use.

Currently we're doing 2 without 1.

Think I'll start with updating the wiki to 1.10. After that there are captcha-plugins available, which should help. Perhaps the spam-blacklist could be added as well.

get rid of the wiki it is NOT a good way for new players to learn how to play spring.

see main for more info on how the wiki is completely ignored.

its hard to navigate, noone wants to read pages and pages of what is oftern crap about hundreds of mods then login to see that BA and XTA are the only things that are played.

A better method would be a complete quick start guide which left out all of the mod specifics. honestly, take one look at the wiki main page and think, if i was new to this game would i really want to read all of that! or should i just ask in main because its so much easier?

actually, the wiki also houses a lot of project and map development content. I have been occasionally adding documentation and after all this wiki crap settles down I will be updating the fbi and the weapon.tdf sections as they are outdated.

The wiki is a very good general collaboration tool we would always keep a need for it.

I think the current menu system for the main page could do with a big streamlining, I think ti should be split into these main categories:

New Users - quickstart guides howto install maps mods, light weight picture orientated
Using Spring - all the camera and keys and etc
Spring Engine Development - svn code etc
AIs - skirmish AIs and the rest
GUI/lua widgets - lua widgets
Game Content - mods
Map Creation - maps
Community - clans media promotional stuff, etc

Those 8 items would lead to their own section menus, and all pages would eb a part of those sections allowing a more tree like structure within the wiki.

The main page listing those iteams would be highly picture orientated with as little text as possible. If possible it should appear not to be part of the wiki at all but a site page indistinguishable from the rest.

Anyways thats my idea, and I think it'd go a long way to blunting the impact of the current wiki while encouraging a more sustainable structure within the content we already have.
