Light side is full of a bunch of stoics who forcibly suppress their individuality and emotion in favor of an passive collective; they thereby inexorably label others outside of this stoic collective as "evil", saying they "upset the [their] balance". Whereas the dark side is tragically misunderstood as being simple stock binary opposite of "good" (light), as evil. It in facts rejects such meek submission of its antithesis light side, embracing the force as an expression of passion, chaos, and above all freedom. I would argue that if there is truly an "evil" force of the two "sides" it would the light side considering the individualist values of our liberal Western Societies in contrast to the collective and conformist attitudes to the light.

Well if you judge by my criticism then you are a "member" of the dark side. Unlike the light side, the dark is not a collective that demands conformity as its neither a collective or an organization. It is composed of those who differ, are indifferent, or are opposed to the light. The dark side is the neutral ground in this case.Zoombie wrote:I don't like either of them. I'm with nutral. the dark side is embroiled not by passion but by obession. They are the other extreme, the light side tries to suppress their emotions because they feel that emotions can cut to the quick and directly to the dark part of people's hearts. Emotions are where things break down and frankly emotions can overide logical clear thinking which they have to have because the dark side obscures things and twists things so no the dark side does not represent a non conformist view.
The dark side twist things, your love will become obession or lust if you allow the darkside to take over. However, love is not of light or dark. Neither is individuality, as jedi are diverse and varied in thier appearence. Dark side seems less conformist because they engage in subterfuge.
However, no if you watch the movies you would know that it is in your EGO that the darkside prevails. Which is why non conformists fall to the darkside because often times they want to be special. They either think they deserve special priveledges or desire some sort of quick fix or boon. They will recieve it but in turn become slaves.
Neutral is a great place to be, be greedy, lustfull etc but not at all having to worry about the extremes of either faction. Frankly, darkside and lightside only applies to the jedi themselves. So ultimately that deathstar controller guy may just be some dude punching to the clock for the local blaster cannon union.

Anyways, I think that the problems you speak of are with the Jedi and Sith, no neccessarily with the Darkside/Lightside
Basic difference is that Dark powers come from the force within oneself... chanelling your own strength and Light powers come from without, chaneling your will to tweak the living force of the Universe... Thus the dark side requires you to channel your emotions, acctually allowing LESS freedom in the long-run, requiring you to have obsession, passion, lust, hate, fear as a constant force in order to channel those powers... it's "easier" because you have direct "control" over yourself but corrupts because you have to be in a constant state of stress... The problem with the old Jedi order is that it cut out all dramatic emotion in order to protect it's members from the temptations of the dark side...
Another problem with what your saying is based on assumptions of a fictional reality... if it was impossible to use the light side without stripping yourself of emotions and it was impossible to use the dark side without entering into emotional chaos and brooding hate... wouldn't it be the natural thing to forbid the dark side and all emotions that could lead to it to students of the force? The sacrifice of the few powerful to protect the weak and innocent?
I don't think calmness or peace would work, and your still corrupting yourself... imagine if you were needing to stop a big metal thing from falling down on you and you had to channel your energy through a positive emotion... it would twist those emotions... sure if you were actually feeling one of those "good" emotions already it would be ok to use them THEN... but how do you TRAIN to streagthen and USE emotions without corrupting them... love turns to lust, excitement turns to obsession, peace turns to callousnes, you start taking joy from obsession and accomplishment instead... perhaps seeking strong sources of emotion just to feed your need... don't think it would work...
