Spring Map Packs

Post by LordMatt »

So I agreed in #sy to make some map packs for spring. The idea will be to put a bunch of good maps together to make it easier for new users to get into the game. I'm thinking of making two packs, one for team games, and one for 1v1s. I'm only going to put in stuff I've played and liked, but I'm happy to try a new map or an underplayed one, so I'm making this thread to get some community input also. I'm including maps based on my judgment of their quality, not necessarily how popular they are. Keep in mind there will be a strict no trolling policy in this thread and those kind of posts will be deleted. If you really don't like my decision, go make your own pack tbfh. :P

Tentative lists for packs from my HD:

1v1 (177MB)
Aquatic_Divide_TNM05-V2.sd7
ArcticPlainsV2.sd7
Battle for PlanetXVII-v01.sd7
Battle_for_Moon-XO-v02.sd7

4886_Lowland_Crossing_TNM01-V4.sd7
MoonQ10x.sd7
Moon_Quartet_Remake.sd7
Painted Desert Remake V2.sd7
Showdown_Remake.sd7
Terra.sd7
The Cold Place Remake V2.sd7

Team Play (268MB)
Altored_Divide.sd7

Think I left something out, or included something I shouldn't have? Let me know! :-)

severnaya.(pretty map that is a good representation of what spring is capable of)
so is it's sister map industrial mountain.

aavikko(better then comet catcher and it is pretty.)

1v1

narrow valley(good straightforward map with some great hills. beginers will find it porcy, good for the more defensive players)

acidbridge redux(ya know the blue one)
-it is sexy

I may think of some others later but I am off to study some more.

From the looks of the list it is one designed to give you all the maps that are played with medium-high frequency in the lobby, not ones that show off the engine or are really neat but never get played.

Then suggest some of the good ones that are not played.

This is the kind of thing I'd dowload for sure if I lost all my maps for some reason, but if it had a bunch of maps that no-one played but 3 people insist are 'really great' I probably would just get the popular maps one by one and not bother with it.

Keep it simple, forcing people to download them wont make them play them as we saw from Caydr's community mod pack.

No one's forcing anyone. The idea behind these packs is that they would be recommended downloads for new users.

A rarely played but good map pack could be a separate idea I suppose...

Rarely played because they are too big(OH MY GOSH > 10 MEGS!)

let's not get into all of that rubbish please. Lordmatt asked for some suggestions on some common maps and I quote "or an underplayed one."

There is no reason to be soo against it. seriously, is it possible to not make drama over this? Noone is forcing anything on you. Frankly there are tons of maps that I have never played because I do not like sorting through tons of speedmetal and duck variants. DOTA is a popular wcIII map.. but that never meant that it was actually good.

I'd recommend a new, very small pack (<100MB) that contains the ultra-common maps.

Altored Divide, SSB v2, Tropical, Tangerine, Delta Siege Dry, and maybe a few others.

Also, for the current mappack, consider throwing in Tempest and EE-RiverGlade.

low metal 1v1: pydah pass
http://spring.unknown-files.net/file/14 ... h-Pass-V2/

foothills is a good team play map IMHO.
http://spring.unknown-files.net/file/12 ... hills-v08/

And please include the old cold place, because it's better & more played then the remake I think :P

painted deserts a team map not a 1v1 map

island divide (the autogenerated map SJ made iirc) is a good map.

+1 to severnaya and EE-riverglades

Cooper hill is also a great 1v1 map.

I'd also suggest you split the map packs again into a third map pack with the largest maps, such as supreme islands/battlefield painted desert etc....

tiny me and mini me might be a good idea too for 1v1, theyre very small file size. Foreboding remake of metal heck with the fixed typemap is tiny too (300kb iirc) it'd be a good addition too.

Honestly, Severnaya isn't finished, it has a few "error" blips at the beginning from the darn features that are missing that need to be added.
(namely the other 2 factory parts)

I'd love for it to be included, but when I finish it, it'll just mean a "new" mappack with it updated... and everyone will probably get stuck downloading it, or the "patch" I guess you could call it (since it would only be the feature models, and texture files), to finish it up...

When is this "pack" supposed to be completed anyways? I've got other aces up my sleeve to fix the "reclaimability" of all the features on the top central plateau to remove that "exploit" on the map as well...

(hince why the map is severnaya v.97)

but, meh, I'm honored its been specifically picked out by most of the replies...

kinda makes me want to finish it... :P

on a side note, maybe we can have the pack as LordMatt states, with "standard" maps, good, balanced, even maps that aren't cruddy maps like most of the "Offical tournament maps" and some Quanto's and Forboding's fractical generated maps, and most if not all, of Agorm and Noize's hand drawn maps, maybe even some of the OTA remakes....

and then have a "high quality" pack that are maps over-loaded with features, and/or have artistic painted mapping to them and the ilk.... (maps that are over 25 megs and whatnot, severnaya, just about anything from picasso, or Quanto, etc.)..

even possibly a pack as KingRaptor states, a "common" pack that has the run-of-the-mill tiny maps with little to no creativity to them, or maps that are not "beautiful" but favor "gameplay" and are commonly played, I.E. Speedmetal and Altored Divide etc.

on a side note though, map packs aren't very favorable to players unless they fall into 2 categories:
1- are new, and want to get a HUGE chunk to start on,
2- have been around, and need to re-install them all...

that means 90-95% of the community isn't gonna care...

its almost a mute effort. :| though its still mildly needed.

Well I put it in team play because of 2v2 play, and I'm trying not to have the same map in both packs. I'll respond to the rest of you later this evening when I have more time.

+1 for old The Cold Place. A classic FFA or 2v2 map.

nice! i've been suggesting this for a while - nice to see it come to fruition.

i'd also suggest making another pack for all the most popular mods. make sure they are in an easily spotted place for noobs, such as on the downloads page, or even make a fully-inclusive version of the spring installer that comes with map and mod packs. anything that makes the game more easily accessible to new players is a good idea - when a game is free, people won't have much hesitation to delete it off of their hard drive if they can't figure out how to get a game going to test it out. we have to cater to them, and the way to do that is by making things as user-friendly as possible.

So you guys really think The Cold Place regular is better than the remake with water mex? I don't want to include them both because that is bloat, but I like the fact that you have to fight over those water mex as well in remake tbh.

I tried terra and I will include it. Also I will include moon quartet. Some other mentions are already in the list so I think some people didn't read it carefully. :P

Those who have not been a part of the TA community for as long as I have (nublings, as I call them) may not know that in OTA 1v1 PD marathon games were often considered the truest measure of a player's skill.

And please keep in mind this pack is not for the average spring player or forum goer, but a person new to the game who wants to download a lot of good maps at once.

I wanted to download and try pydah pass and foothills, but it appears cuppy spilled bong water on the download server, as it isn't working.

The pack is scheduled to be finished whenever I get around to it/think enough suggestions have been posted in this thread.

As for a mod pack, I wouldn't be the one to make such a thing since I would probably only include one mod.
