Re: WALL-E Rocks.
The reason we haven't found the missing links yet (and we've found a goodly large amount of them, btw), is because the Earth is 2 things:
Muthafuckin big and muthafucking old. It takes a long time to look through the whole place, and lets not forget, there have been plenty of disasters and calamities that could destroy the fossils. Asteroid impacts, volcanic eruptions, and so on.
Also, I love how a creationist refers to "magic" in a disparaging way. It's just funny. And since when has evolutionary theorists EVER said that evolution is an explanation of how life appeared? We have no concrete ideas of how life itself appeared. Evolution just describes how it branches off and changes itself over time based off the principles of natural selection.
I personally believe that Evolution is the best bet. Most evidence, really. Zoy64 points to the missing links...I point to the rest of the fucking fossil record.
Anywho...weren't we talking about Wall-E a while ago?

Forb.. seriously.. STFU you just said the key one here buddy.. that above statement shows me that you have ABSOLUTELY no clue about science or how its worked or implemented. IF you did you would realise that the above statement only gives Evolution more weight, not less..Forboding Angel wrote: Also keep in mind that Evolution is a theory, not a law.
TLDR: Laymans Law != Scientific Law
Laymans Theory != Scientific Theory
The definitions are NOT the same..

Re: WALL-E Rocks.
Orly, then why do we refer to newtons laws? Laws because they are proven, before proof you have theory. Darwin's Evolution has NEVER been proven, and Can't be proven. Just as much as Creationism or Intelligent Can't be proven (course many would argue that, but that isn't the point, I'm talking about physical proof here).
In science things become theory before law. Newtons laws are easily provable. Pick up a pebble and a large rock, drop both at the same time. If that's no conclusive enough for you, drop a cannonball from a second story window, and drop a fist sized rock at the same time.
Laws.
Darwin's evolution cannot be proven(joke), otherwise I would have 3 hands by now
(/joke)
Argh, you are treating the theory of darwin's evolution like einstein's theory of relativity, the two are not equatable bud.
Concerning Evolution, there are 2 different schools of thought. Evolution of a species, and Darwin's theory of evolution. The two differ GREATLY, so make sure you are paying attention to what you are talking about.
For the record, I am talking about Darwin's Evolution.
Edit: Regardless of how right we all believe them to be, Einstein's theory of relativity has not yet been, concisively proven (course, walking a very fine line here) by means of man himself. For example, I can't remember the last time I traveled faster than light.

Re: WALL-E Rocks.
Look, when Forb's referring to Fanger as Argh, Europeans and Americans are arguing about moral relevance, and we're on the third page of totally irrelevant arguments about a movie you guys have not seen... it's kind've funny, but meh... wtf, people?
The movie is not about evolution, it's not about greenhouse gasses.
It's not even really about trash, even though it features very prominently as a way to drive the story forward. It is about what being human means, and I cannot and will not expand any further on this, because it'll just ruin the experience.
I swear, this has been the most to-do about nothing I have ever read here, and that's saying something.
I expected whining from people who watched Cars and thought I'd be plugging a kiddie flick. Instead, I get this stuff, which anybody who's seen the movie, and has a brain, will immediately recognize is dumb.
It's like watching arguments about Passion of the Christ where people who haven't watched it are arguing how much it venerates Satan, or something
The stuff that the movie's talking about that will piss off certain folks... and I am not going to argue that some won't be pissed... is NOT any supposed environmental message, to be perfectly honest. There's nothing there that you would not want your children to know about. No scary messages or ridiculous stuff. No Al Gore peaking from behind the curtain. It's really, really not like that.
Watch it. Or don't. But quit arguing about stuff that has nothing to do with what the movie is really about, though, it's silly.

There are no absolute laws in science. Only theories. They are ever changing, based on the best knowledge we have. Don't confuse scientific proof (for example getting expected results based on calculations) with absolute proof.
Anyway, people are arguing without seeing the movie because it's not out yet (in most countries I belive). Really looking forward to seeing this, based on your comments.

if anyone ever tries to teach my kids the theory of relativity in school I'm going to fucking cut them up.
Re: WALL-E Rocks.
LOl the theory of evolution has been proven as much as it is possible to prove it and accepted. This is pure ignorane on your part.
It is only still considered "contreversial" because the church opposes it so much.
a Theory is accepted as truth while nothing can defeat it and there is enough data to coraborate it...the theory of evolution has so much evidence and it continues to deliver as we speak as species die off while others servive.
Creationism and intelligent design have no proof and are refuted easily using fossil records of different stages of "complex mechanisms" like the eye for example, that the creationists like to give as an example of a "complex" mechanism that could not have reached such complexity without devine intervention(ther are also refutes to any and all claims by these crazy people using science and what we knows of the natural world.
creationsim and intelligent design are based on the belief in a higher power, and have no place in science.
The fact you put them together with the theory of evolution is plain crazy.
and yes you deserve to be loled at by as many people as possible.

Re: WALL-E Rocks.
I'm sorry argh, it's that dumb avatar he uses. :-/
@Teutooni, Your argument falls apart when you consider newtons laws. Newtons laws are absolute fact, and fairly easy to replicate in many cases.
Look, this discussion is circular and tbh it doesn't really amuse me anymore because it is so circular, and eventually it will come down to personal potshots (like most discussions here). To that end, I will look forward to seeing the movie, as I am a huge Dreamcatcher/pixar fan when it comes to their animated movies. I still haven't seen Bee Movie which from what I understand is really funny. On the other hand I don't really care for going to theatres anymore cause I always end up paying for other people (god forbid that you don't blow your paychecks as soon as they get to your hands) and at 10 bucks a pop plus a cool 7 bucks worth of price gouge for popcorn and a soda... meh.

Re: WALL-E Rocks.
bah newtons laws do not always work otherwise there would be no point in relativity.
Re: WALL-E Rocks.
Exactly my point. Newtons laws were exceeded by einsteins relativity. They may be even further transcended by quantum gravity or string theory or something.AF wrote:bah newtons laws do not always work otherwise there would be no point in relativity.
Re: WALL-E Rocks.
I think that if you dont like something your kids are being teached at school, you can just tell then that it is not true, just something accepted by most people. Tandan! :)
I hate enviroementalists. I think its because people who think enviroementalism is a useless waste of time fell like the whole humanity is being screwed by it (I do). In my school there are some papers writen by kids where they basically say "Preserve the enviroement else it will get angry and kill us". I hope they wrote that because they werent feeling like trying harder, not because they believe this
I think that saying that you have an absolute proof for something is stupid. You cant prove your senses are working right, so how are you going to prove anything if all information you get comes from then? :)
Personally I believe that creationist only makes sense in a universal level... that is, somebody created our spot in reality and "kick started" it and then the randow stuff that happened after ended up creating life and making it evolve.
I havent seen the movie yet, but it seens interesting. Looking forward to seeing it :)

Re: WALL-E Rocks.
It is genuinely disheartening that the maker of Evolution RTS doesnt accept Evolution.
Evolution is not some 'controversial theory' it is the foundation of biology. It is the cause of all the diversity of life, from observable (in the human timescale) adaptation (dog breeds, antibiotic resistant drugs) to speciation which can be proven from the fossil record and from living relics of transitional species.

Re: WALL-E Rocks.
There are a couple examples of mid evolved species being found. The reality is, speciation seems to happen in on punctuated equilibrium so the relitive time spans where a species is in between commonly known speciations is generally very very small. (10,000 years vs a lifespan of a species generally being 2-300 million years)Zoy64 wrote:but then, if evolution was how we came to be, why can't scientists find the "ape-man" skeleton? what about the "bird-fish" remains? now, if they could prove that evolution did happen and that we came from single-cell organisms that magically appeared on earth which in turn came from an accident; then i will no longer be a Creationist.
Don't get me wrong... I'm a creationist, but I believe that the methods of creation were immensely complex, but ultimately scientifically understandable. I believe evolution played an integral role in the origin of species... but I don't think it was all strictly accidental. The point I'm making is that there is evidence out there... the evidence doesn't disprove the existence of God, but it does tell us a huge amount about the way the world around us works. There may be a "damn, well we understand how things work but this turn of events is just completely unexplainable" moment coming up in the future, I don't know... But I really don't think we're at that point yet. We have good evidence for evolution, we have good models for how it works, we are starting to develop an understanding of organic lifeforms in a more integral way then ever. If you can prove the hammer exists does that mean the carpenter didn't make the house?

On Abiogenesis (a different process), though....
Re: WALL-E Rocks.
I love how Argh tries desperately to shoe horn the thread back on topic...
But, really, this movie is about, at it's heart, how a single person can wake you up and notice the beauty of the world around you. It's also about a million other things equally as profound, but that was the message that resonated most with me.
Normally kid's moves aren't exactly works of Art...but I'd say Wall-E is.

Maybe they should put a DVD copy of it in the museum...
