Not yet; there are still plenty of missing basic features at this point.

question: is Planetwars open-source such that, if I wanted, I could roll myself a different metagame?
its closed source made specifically for CA and i dont think quant/licho want other mods/games to use it. Not really selfish seeign as its alot of work and the main reason it was made was to promote CA

Spring's alot of work. Doesn't mean it shouldn't be open.Otherside wrote:Not really selfish seeign as its alot of work and the main reason it was made was to promote CA
I'm not going to complain too much, CA has done alot of good things for the spring community, but my stance remains, if you want to be seen as selfless here you don't build closed source projects.
Re: Planetwars
No, you make them open sauce and complain when people use the contents.
Re: Planetwars
It may be selfish, but when people know about BA chickens but not that CA has core chickens something is wrong.

Chickens is integrated into CA. No extra files to download.

doesn't seem to be any indictation of how to register... is it closed beta? if so, maybe have something to say that so ppl don't spend so much time trying to find the register button ^^
Re: Planetwars
When you join the autohost it tells you how.

You can join the planetwars autohost even when a game is in progress in order to register.
So, buying upgrades. The idea was suggested last night that when those bought units are destroyed, then they are destroyed permanently... how do you think this would affect balance?
So far, it seems that the early game is badly affected, especially on small maps, by the heavier units (fido, zeus etc), air units (especially trans) but not so much by scouting and really light units. Is this just a warming up period where people need to learn to adapt to the new features and maybe play a more defensive early game? Do we need to know in advance what an enemy has to start with?
I for one welcome our new Baaaau overlord. Also, good job to arm for pulling a load of planets back last night

Re: Planetwars
Sounds good. You could also heavily restrict available units to only few deemed "balanced" enough. Maybe restrict buildings to t1?Acidd_UK wrote:The idea was suggested last night that when those bought units are destroyed, then they are destroyed permanently...
Also, please add functionality to remove (sell?) purchased upgrades asap.
Re: Planetwars
This will only make it even more unbalanced than it already is.Teutooni wrote:Acidd_UK wrote: Also, please add functionality to remove (sell?) purchased upgrades asap.
When attacking, put all points into mobile units, when defending put all points into labs.
Re: Planetwars
Right now upgrades are stupidly OP. The best option right now is probably to make mobiles one-use and buildings destroyable.

The scripts are GPL, the artwork is public domain. There are no other conditions. This means BA can use chickens as legitimately as CA.
I'm not claiming we're selfless. Giving our work away creates a lot of drama and resentment, it's tiring and just not worth it anymore. Especially when it makes it harder to start games and finally enjoy what we worked on. Individual modders can talk with us when planet wars is stable, but the project won't be open source, for now.SwiftSpear wrote: I'm not going to complain too much, CA has done alot of good things for the spring community, but my stance remains, if you want to be seen as selfless here you don't build closed source projects.

sad
Re: Planetwars
yeah how dare the CA team not want their content / uniqueness whored out to BA

Re: Planetwars
Different mods compete for players - that's reality. BA is the only one that CA developers want people to play against. These features are added to attract players.
If CA had a real, solid player-base the way BA does, I'm sure the CA devs would happily open-source their products so that they could be incorporated into other mods, including BA. However, CA does not. They do the work, but don't have enough players to even get to play the results, while BA players get to do it all the time. That has to be incredibly frustrating.
There are probably more games of BA+Chickens than CA Chicken games. That's gotta sting.
Which is sad, because, even if CA might lack the depth of BA at high level play (I really can't say, since I'm not really a high-level player) it is, imho, much more fun.
