Video game music is IMO under appreciated in the industry. I can think of several games where the music absolutely made the game. TA especially.

Koji Kondo is... legendary. Leaving him off a list of top game music composers would be like leaving Beethoven off a list of top classical composers, or Carlos Santana off a list of top guitarists, or JRR Tolkien off a list of top fantasy writers.

Great songs? All of his songs fit perfectly with the games they're made for. The background music in Super Mario Bros 3 coordinates nearly perfectly with the levels they are designed for. The music for Super Mario World has a sense of unity rare in video game music - each song is a variation on the same melody, with enough significant differences in tempo, instrumentation, and rhythm that most people only realize it subconsciously.

I'm not an expert on game music by any means, but I guess my top 5 would be:

1) Koji Kondo
2) Frank Klepacki
3) Nobuo Uematsu
4) Jeremy Soule
5) Alexander Brandon

...based both on quality of music and contributions to the field.

Doesn't matter. I still need 5 songs of which I will take 11.4 seconds from each of them! Sooo..... slow/ambient type music won't do!

I can't believe nobody has posted this...

Martin O'Donnell for the Halo sound tracks.
That's my number one.

Unfortunately, Halo games are hated in the Spring community, so I'll probably get flamed for this...

Google -> "super mario bros soundtrack"

But it sounds like your competition or whatever should be for the top 10 video game compositions... you're not going to figure out the top 10 composers from 11.4 second soundbytes.

Peter McConnell - Grim Fandango

The music in that game is amazing. Mixes jazz/bop/swing with traditional Mexican tunes and a few others.
