Well Gothic 1 and 2 imo are the best RPGs of that kind. With Gothic 3 it's a bit different. There were huge problems with the game and imo this came from two sides: The publisher didn't want to delay it (again) and so it was released very unfinished (I mean they starting putting monsters into their world like 2-3 months before the release so you know what I mean). So for this it is kind of the publishers fault...
On the other side the dev team really made some stupid mistakes - there were only some rough ideas about what went wrong but it was pretty much about two guys working on two things and when they finished they couldn't combine it so they had to start all over again. There really had to have been a lack of communication. And to say the truth even if Gothic 3 had been delayed - when looking at the patches that came out it would have taken at least another year until you could call it halfway finished and well for a publisher that are worlds (plus without the huge community input the patches wouldn't have been that good in the first place)...
If you don't own Gothic 1 and 2 go ahead now and buy them! If you start with Gothic 3 and rate the whole series because of this you'd be wrong (although Gothic 3 still is quite good but nowhere near its predecessors)...

I got a good deal when I got the gothic series, all 3 games plus the expansion for #2, for 20 bucks
