I've got D2X-XL. Was just playing it on Saturday, in fact. It's kinda buggy, though... If you schedule a multiplayer session then let me know!

I can't decide if I like Descent 2 or Descent 3 multiplayer better. Or single player, for that matter. They both have their strong points...

D3 multiplayer works, but the PXO server is down. You have to find servers using a 3rd party tracker. Players are also pretty scarce, although it picks up a little bit in the evening.

This is the tracker that I use on occasion:
http://d3.descent.cx/tracker.d3

Currently only 11 players :( on 57 servers.

Descent 3 multiplayer is nuffin compared to Descent 2 multiplayer. Descent 3's multiplayer suffers from these flaws:
-All missiles suck unless you make a direct hit (which is impossible)
-All primaries suck, except two or three (out of ten) and those two or three are unfun to fight with
-Hit detection is counterstrike-style (actual collision detection, or something close) rather than doom style (anywhere in the vicinity of the target counts as a hit)

The hit detection bit sounds like it's a bad thing, but you have to remember that Descent was built around the idea of having crappy hitboxes in multiplayer so it was still very fun. In Descent 3 you need pinpoint accuracy with slow-moving weapons (all the ones that suck) or absurd pinpoint accuracy with instant-hit weapons (all the ones that make multiplayer suck)

Sigh... I wish I was back in the old days. Playing on Khan or heat.net, always players around, some guy named "robocop" that I harassed for no good reason... Always some "demigod"-rank guy named the_hunter_ who would kick everyone's ass because he used that fancy "spaceorb" joystick...

-All missiles suck unless you make a direct hit (which is impossible)
Are you serious? Descent 3's missiles are so much more destructive it's not even funny. Napalm and frag missiles (my favorite) are easily instant kills in the hands of a veteran. Megas and black sharks are over-the-top deadly. Impact mortars are also instant kills when used correctly.

Granted, concussion missiles kinda suck... but you can fire them extremely fast. They're all about spray & pray.

Yeah, cyclone missile is pretty much worthless.
-All primaries suck, except two or three (out of ten) and those two or three are unfun to fight with
The primaries definitely suck more on average, I'll give you that. Omega cannon is crap. Napalm is practically worthless in multiplayer. EMD is worthless. Microwave is worthless unless you're flying the Black Pyro.

Quad super lasers are quite effective, though. The fusion cannon is extremely good. Vauss is quite useful in the right circumstances, and the stinking mass driver is so insane it makes me want to disable the weapon.
-Hit detection is counterstrike-style (actual collision detection, or something close) rather than doom style (anywhere in the vicinity of the target counts as a hit)
Yeah, it's definitely harder to hit. But I think part of the problem is also that Descent 3 levels tend to have more wide-open spaces, and the ships move much faster. I really don't mind the "perfect" hit detection compared to those other two factors.

In medium-to-small rooms, though, fights usually end very quickly.[/b]

You're right, the secondaries were actually mostly good, the problem was just that there was no good time to use them, mostly. Sure, frag and napalm etc were great, just that it was necessary to make a direct hit just to do any damage since there were so few narrow places, which was Descent 1/2's specialty.

The PERFECT descent 3 would have been a refinement on Descent 2, and just better graphics and more levels. None of this "story" crap. Instead of huge spaces to demonstrate how great the engine was and whatever, just have the existing level design but with ultra-high-detailed cave walls rather than being all cube-based.

I mean, make the walls really look like they're out of a *mine*. Have a few larger open areas where there's obviously been excavation. Some outdoor areas if that's absolutely necessary, just just as a transition. Descent 3 bored me so badly that I don't think I ever made it beyond level 12 or so. Action? No action. Even the "fighting" all just felt like drama to show off the graphics.

....Yeah alright I haven't played it in like 4 years and I mostly just feel hateful and bitter. It just wasn't fun.

I hadn't played Descent 3 multiplayer for several months, so I decided I've give it a whirl...

Loads of fun! The map was Stadium, which is one of my favorite Anarchy maps. It's FAST like you wouldn't believe. There's one large open area and a couple cramped tunnels holding most of the weapons (and no mass driver!)

I'll say this, though... D3 multiplayer doesn't have a learning curve; it's a learning cliff. If you haven't played before then you can count on dying a couple hundred times before you start to get the hang of it :)

Now if I could just find a CTF game on Halcyon...

No, I'm just sunk in depression that there's only one other person here who knows dick all about Descent...

Lordo's answers vs correct answers:
-The first and last names of the main Descent arc villain
-Samuel Dravis - CORRECT
-The main color of the first and last bosses in Desent 1
-Yellow and Red - CORRECT
-The weakness of the last boss in Descent 2
-Gauss Cannon (As with most bosses...) - WRONG, he has a glowy green bit on his back, the rest of him is invulnerable. The best way to beat him is to shoot an earthshaker behind him.
-The name of the first boss in Descent 3
-Super Thief - CORRECT
-The name of your ship in Descent 1/2
-The Pyro GX - CORRECT
-The solar location of the first and last missions of Descent
-Zeta Aquilae - WRONG, your first mission takes place on the Moon, the last mission takes place on Pluto... BETA Aquilae is the location of the first missions in Descent 2, I think.
-The color your malfunction at the end of Descent 2 creates
-Purple - CORRECT
-Completion of this sentence: "Prepare for Descent, ________ ________"
-"Prepare for Descent, Material Defender." - CORRECT

Coulda swore I kicked his ass with Gauss, and I dunno why I thought Descent 2 when you said Descent. I'm not complaining though, thanks for the money. Now, this was intended for community dept repayment, so I'm gonna have to do something productive with this...

EDIT: Alright, I donated $10 to UF. Yay.

Huh? He wasn't asking for info about descent, he was complaining how few people knew about descent.
(Durr?)
Why would he google a series he already owns?...
