The grass texture that has been plaging me forever...

Post by Forboding Angel »

I know I spelled the topic wrong ;p

Meh. Riverdale. THe most beautiful grass texture in all of existence. Ever since I started mapping I have been on a quest to have grass that looked that damn good.

I have tried countless times. I've failed more than I care to relate. However I had a breakthrough when secure asked me to do some work on RD for him (btw I havn't forgotten SecurE, I'm still working on it to make sure I don't screw up and get it right).

Much to my suprise, the riverdale grass texture has little flakes/flecks of yellow in the texture. Now, and first glance it didn't catch my attention, but then I had a thought that hit me like a ton of bricks...

That's why it looks so pretty! Is because when you zoom out even a little bit the yellow blend in with the rest of the texture and creates a placebo effect. Amazing if you ask me. I had never ever thought of that.

To wrap this up. I'm sure there is something to be learned here... I'm still working on that ;p

BTW I will be happy to post my textures for you guys. I moved yesterday and I'm in limbo until tommorrow, possibly even the fourth of july, so I will post them when I get the opportunity. Sorry for the delay :?

Yeah, Riverdale is a very slick map. A pity Xtr_SecurE seems to have stopped making maps.
How about we make this a texture library thread where everyone can post their textures?

well I'll link to a tutorial I found when I get my main comp back up (I don't know where it is as I found it purely on accident) that tells you how to make a seamless texture out of any picture. It's amazingly sweet :-)

My textures are coming as soon as I get my comp back going (My new place isn't ready until monday or tuesday).

I have method of making large texture out of a lot of smaller tiles which looks good, don't obviously repeat and compresses well.

example ~1.6Mb;

Used in this map.
