New Map: Fastest Map

Post by DarkOppressor »

I just finished making my first map ever, just started messing with it last night, so don't be too hard on me :P The map is called Fastest Map, and is a port of the map of the same name in StarCraft. It's 16x16 and a metal map. A couple screenies:

You can download the map on File Universe:
http://www.fileuniverse.com/?p=showitem&ID=3669

Also, I made a 32x32 variant, because I enjoy big maps, you can get it here: http://www.fileuniverse.com/?p=showitem&ID=3670

EDIT: I am aware that the big version still only has 4 starting points, I'm adding more and will upload a better version later. Also, any and all hints, tips, comments, suggestions, criticisms are welcome, I'd like to start making more maps for Spring.

uhm..I see you kept the original optic of the map
Iam downloading at the moment, I hope the mex-radius is not too small.
Not really much to say about this rather simple map, might be fun to play.

this will be interesting (for AA at least)...

normally metal maps have no geo spots... there's actually a reason to expand a bit, albeit not too much (fusions aren't that much worse...)

my main criticism is that its a metal map :P

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
just tested it in singleplayer.
The mexradius is definitaly way too small.
One mex gives ~22, a moho ~80 metal.
This is much too much, even for a metalmap.
Really. Trust me.
This way it'll be just another stupid (speed)metalmap :(

In the Starcraft map, all your economy was concentrated in one spot, at the "never-ending crystal."
With the need to build depots there was somewhat a limit, how fast your eco could grow, this doesn't exist in Spring.
One builder can builder 4 mexxes in a few seconds, giving you 100+ metal, as much as you normally get in the endgame...thats just stupid.
Maybe the metal should ONLY be placed around the geo's...but please, in a sensible way.

Oh, and change the description to:
"THIS IS THE FA$$TEST MAP EVER CREATED. ALL YOUR MINERS CAN MINE THAT MINERAL!!"

/edit:
idea for the metal-layout:

Thanks for all the comments, I have actually considered the description thing, I might change it, haha. Also, I like the idea you had about the metal area around the geos knorke, I think I might do that.

EDIT: Also, what is a good mex radius to use, keeping in mind that I'm changing the metal map to have metal spots only around the geos.

I think a mexradius of 150 is about the size of a level 1 factory...
Maybe make it a little bigger, so its easier to upgrade to advancedmoho extractors.

Are you guys playing the same map that I'm looking at? Fastestmapever was speedmetal for starcraft. It allowed 4 minute massive battleship rushes, and massive defence lines. Nothing quite like a squad of 12 ultralisks in action.

Large mex radius and low metal incomes are totally the opposite of what this map is supposed to be all about.

Well, I toyed around with less metal but ultimately, I think that Fastest Map was and is a speedy resource gaining map made specifically to keep resources from being the main focus, and I decided to keep that idea in this version. I've also added typemaps since I just figured out what they're for. Once again, thanks for all the feedback :D

hm, do whatever you want with your map.
imo there is a difference between "lots of metal" and "stupidly boring much metal."
In the current form this is just another speedmetalclone

I was thinking if you want a fast start, have about +100 metal available to start positions if you have all available spots taken up by AA mohos and have at least 3000 metal available in 50-150 metal features in the start positions... I think that would be reasonable...

/me goes to make a map...

The last thing we need is another Speedmetal, with a different layout.

I agree with korne. Playing fastest it wasnt crazy minerals right off the bat, it was more like you just didnt have to expand, but the minerals in the start area were infinite, so you economy was based on how many workers you built.

Maybe there could be a tiny mex radius but every mex gives 1-2 metal?

This in my opinon would be more the style of fastest, not so much 'Infinite resources' but 'Infinite expansion within your own base'

Yeah, I never really played Starcraft, but I think your map should have some metal/geos/whatever in the centre to encourage players to fight over the centre and not just go on an uberporcfest...
