it was a download my brother got. big defense tower that i think shot a ton of medium range plasma. bring it back?
anyway i think there should be better options for vlv 2 defenses against rushes of small fast kbots. this would balance the ease of overwhelming longer range defenses like a few pop up plasma cannons, annihilators with a bunch of zippers or pyros.
i think we should add something that has a huge turret of short range lazers or plasmas and a ton of armor... there is no level 2 upgrade type unit for a llt/hlt

If your going all defense, you will lose.
Lasers ARE for faster units, ever see a guardian/punisher try to aim for fast small units? They dont work too well. Sometimes they can land close enuff and do some nice aoe and that works great. But chances are, the fast units will dodge the fire unless the enemy isn't smart enough to keep them spread out a bit. They are meant more for long range killing of big, slow units.
Lasers are your best bet for fast units. If you play AA, pit bulls work great against really fast units, they are a great zipper counter. Couple those with some hlt and a few nano towers and you got a decent defense against a raid. Mind you, DTing like knorke said will prolong the life of your defense, cuz raid type units can't shoot over dt (zippers, flashes, etc). Some units can, but you gotta pick and choose there.
Defense will help, but if you have no offense to back up your wall, it will crumble. Radar + constant scouting/patrolling will help prevent such a rush/raid.
Then again, I haven't played spring since .67, so who knows if any of this changed. Last version of AA I played was 1.4.
