Anybody notice in the Supreme Commander video that friendly units fire through each other? It's a design decision, not "a stupid bug". For ChrisT sakes, realism isn't an issue.
O,o
someone confirm this. i'll be rewatching myself (seen in like 4 times at least now :D)
Well, when they are taking down the monkeylord, they are definitely "shooting through each other". But I think that it is more accurately "shooting above each other at the really high target." And I havent seen any of the lasers shoot through friendly units.
Personally, I really hope they decide to implement friendly fire, not for the reealism, but for the wealth of strategic possibilities it would open. Flanking would become actually worth something, hills would actually become important places to hold, ballistic units that fire OVER each other would be more valuble for their cost in certain situations... All kinds of great stuff.
It increases micro, but that is a good thing, because it would force players to have to use their time wisely, and make the game more intense.
missiles in the future should be smart enough to go around their friendly units. I'm sure tanks and such will avoid shooting each other in the back, so your not getting freebie damage. But you will be gumming up their fire base!
And yes they were firing missiles (When it zooms in you can see they are only firing from their little 'missile' launchers on the top. Also the monkey Lord is very tall)
So whoever said this blasphemous statement (Molloy that is) should be crucified. I HAVE SPOKEN!

I'm all for additional realism in terms of weapon trajectories et all in games, but the units not firing trough friendlies in Spring is causing problems.
Basically, units are too dumb to not arrange themselves to shoot the enemy and not each other.
There are two ways of solving this issue.
The first: let units shoot through friendly units (weapon explosions and splash still damage friendlies though)
The second: unit AI/Pathfinding is improved so that friendlies don't shoot each other
Which do you think would be quicker to implement?
I say use the first option until we can improve the AI and pathfinding to the point that units won't fire their weapons into the backs of friendlies and will instead arrange themselves for maximum firing abilities (alternatively, improve the formations etc so that players can arrange the units themselves, for all you micro addicts out there). Once the AI/Pathfinding has reached that level, we can't return to the 'weapons will impact, explode and damage friendlies'. Heck, it would be best if it was mod-based.
I've heard that one of the things that has been worked on the most by SupCom's team is pathfinding. Why? Cuase you have thousands of units...moveing every witch way, and commanded by a few mouse clicks.
Yeeeeeeeeah. Thats going to be hard. So I hope that the pathfinding will work around the whole "dumb units" thing.

so who's up to cracking SupCom and stealing their pathfinding algorithm?
