Shades of green are different quantities of metal under the surface. Bright red is an area occupied by a metal extractor.

It's just the metal view of the map as stated earlier. It's a nice feature.

I thought that it would just have the metal outcroppings of the original game. But this is cool to! So you turn on the metal view and put metal extractors on the sites with the higest metal concentration

From a realistic point of view, it really does make more sense I suppose. There aren't just chunks of infinite metal deposits laying around on earth.
