Welcome screen for newly registered Spring players

Post by espylaub »

To put off complete beginners from immediately joining a 4v4 after downloading the game for the first time, and as an orientation for first-time users of the Lobby Client.

If there is such a thing already, please delete this thread.

Something along the lines of:

Hello and welcome to Total Annihilation: Spring!

Thank you for downloading the game, we hope that you enjoy playing it.

However, Spring can be rather complex at times, which is why we strongly encourage you to read these Wiki-entries before playing your first game, especially if you have never played the original Total Annihilation:

Starting with Spring: http://taspring.clan-sy.com/wiki/Read_Me_First
Playing Spring: http://taspring.clan-sy.com/wiki/Using_Spring

Please consider joining or hosting small beginner matches, you will most certainly have more fun playing against opponents with a similar skill level than being mangled by experienced players in a big game.

You can also join games as a spectator and watch other people play (Please ask the host if speccing is ok). This is a great way to learn about the game and the units, because you can see them all in action. You can even ask the players a question or two in game.

The rest of the Wiki is here: http://taspring.clan-sy.com/wiki/Main_Page
The FAQ is http://taspring.clan-sy.com/wiki/FAQ

If you would like to participate in the development of Spring, discuss it with other players or find out more about cookies, you can sign up for the messageboard here: http://taspring.clan-sy.com/phpbb/index.php

Spring also has a very useful replay feature which automatically records all games you play. Watch these replays to see how your opponents play, to learn about new strategies, tactics, units and build orders.

Be friendly, play fairly, be patient (this is still a beta after all) and, above all, have fun.

The Spring Community.
Maybe that will help a little. We will be getting more and more beginners as Spring gets better and gets more publicity, and we have to accomodate them somehow, match them up with similarly experienced players, help them learn the game and prevent frustration on all sides.

What do you think?

Yeah, I just saw a new German player join. I was afk, and just read the chat that happened while i was gone. He asked for help, an introduction to the game, but noone answered, so he left after a few minutes.

This would have helped him.

Lets see if he comes back.

Are you sure? I thought player couldn't hear spectator, to prevent cheating by spectators saying "He's over there!".

I am pretty sure this is possible, spec text is shown with square parentheses around the spec name, and I've seen that while playing.

Specs can talk to other players or, through a: or s:, other spectators. They can also make map marks that are visible only to other specs.

They can also erase marks made by any player, and the erasure will be visible to that player's team. That should probably be fixed...
