Distributed data download

Post by krogothe »

I created a new thread to change the focus.
It would be really cool if we had a p2p system for downloading maps and mods (or even path files). Intead of making the devs pay for bandwidth, we would be able to download content in a p2p fashion. Once a player is in-game the upload/download bandwidth could be throttled down but since a lot of us idle and chat, it would surely be helpful in faster download speeds and smaller bills for fnordia!
hows that?

This is really something for a finished product that needs some polish, not for a project like spring that still needs half its code restructured, needs integrated script support, GUI support, abstracted model handling.. the list goes on...

But, if someone still would want to pursue it, it could be done by adding a new archive type for the filesystem that represents a link to an online resource.

Daily Topic Rotation.
The reason that p2p isn't used, you got right: You don't want to have it running while playing spring.
A system that could automaticly turn down (or turn off) the bandwidth usage would bee cool.
