Optimus Prime wrote:the idea of a real autoinstaller by joining a game sounds good to me too. But this installer should do 100% alone means, you only have to click on a game than there should be the message "you dont have the right mod, you wanna install it now?" and when you click "yes", the mod will be loaded and installed into the right folder.
So there is only ONE click for the players to install a mod and not choosing the install path, extracting and clicking on the link somewhere on FU.
Altaclient has the first half of it.
He directs you to FU when you try to enter a game without having the correct mod.
same as with beta's client..

Best idea I've read so far. It's not a bad idea to bundle content together for installation that not even mouth-breathers can get wrong, just so long as the others (pretty much everyone who browses the forums) who keep up with what is what in the mods and maps are able to pick and choose through the forum, FU, and such, for the things that we actually want.

The seperatie idea is how stratagus works. The engine is a simple installation. For content you need a seperate installer, Wargus for example. This would indeed solve most legal issues. (wargus grabs contend from the original Warcraft 2 disk. maybe you could let the mod installer ask for the OTA cd)

I'd like to see the mods download button moved into the main client window. I can't count the number of WTF??!s I've seen from single-chevrons...

"WTF!!! I CAN'T GET INTO THE BATTLE ROOM I DON'T HAVE THE MOD WHY DO YOU KEEP TELLING ME THAT I HATE YOU ALL YOU ******************ERS!!!! I'M NEVER PLAYING THIS GAME AGAIN I HATE MY LIFE WHY IS THIS ALL HAPPENING TO ME I NEED TO GO LISTEN TO MY EMO MUSIC AND PAINT MY NAILS BLACK MOMMY WHERE'S MOMMY!!!!!"

I'd rather my mod not be included with spring. It is easier for me to update things as it is. Where some mods like FF not actually made but converted from the work of others. I personally take pride in the fact that GA is mine and I control it.

if people like your mod they will play it.   :!:  so make your mod good and they will come.

I agree 100%

However beta should update the more mods button so that it dl's the mod directly to the mods folder along with an auto refresh of the mods list. This would be very useful. Also, then instead of xta being "official" it would be a "mod" therefore negating legal issues with spring itself.

Once EE is completely 100% cavedog crap free it would be cool to see it included as official, however, giving all mods an even ground to start from is a very good thing imo.

if I remember correctly, spring used to be a good 55/60 Mb big? im sure it was.

With FF (15 Mb ish) included with the latest, it would barely be 55 Mb big.

In any case, wouldn't there be several different versions of the latest available to download anyway? i.e. basic no mods, XTA, XTA/AA, XTA/AA/FF/EE, etc.

EDIT: afterthought; FF play should be compulsory to the entire human population
