1) Minnesota Symphony Orchestra.

Followed by all of those other symphony orchestras.

Oh yeah, and while at Pandora.com I found:

2) Juno Reactor.

Flame away.

I don't know about best 5 bands... I don't think about music so much in terms of whci bands did what...
but I can tell you what the 5 best (more or less) damned songs ever made were:

1.) "Dream On" - Aerosmith
2.) "Twilight Zone" - Golden Earring
3.) "Rock You Like a Hurricane" [edit]-Scorpions, I got my band info wrong[/edit]
4.) "Fade to Black" - Metallica
5.) At this point I can't rank them, they're simply "good songs"

1. They Might Be Giants
2. Lemon Demon
if only for "Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny"
3. New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra
if only for "Super Smash Brothers in Concert"
4. Apocalyptica
Cellos have a better sound than guitars, no matter what the music
5. Juno Reactor
if only for their work on the Matrix movies.

Wow, I actually have 5 bands on my play list. I find that surprising.

Composers
1. Bach
2. Jeremy Soule
3. John Williams
4. Mozart
5. James Horner

Of course there has to be some j-rock on this list:
Dir en Grey
Asian Kung-Fu Generation

But mostly I listen to trance:
M.I.K.E.
Blank & Jones
Armin van Buuren
Markus Schulz

Those were at the top of my head, most of the time I listen to webradio like di.fm so it's mixed.

in no particular order:
  • The Rolling Stones
    Black Sabbath
    Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Lynyrd Skynyrd
    Golden Earring
I probably forgot alot of them, so don't comment.

if you want to flame, you can start with how J-"rock" (All the J-'music' I've heard was identified as 'J-pop' to me though, is there a difference?) is just a bunch of super-pop shiny-happy music...

But it is. I know, I can tell. I haven't heard OF it before now, and i've never actually listened to it, but its pretty obvious what with the name and all.
