Sproppix?

Post by Slamoid »

Idea: A LiveCD version of Spring (Knoppix) with maps and mods and AI, put together by devs and released in ISO format? Being livecd it would automatically load basic drivers for networking, DCHP, Video, Sound, and USB Peripheral, also autodetect basic CPU speed and adjust LoD settings accordingly.

Thoughts?

Problems:
- To play Spring it is needed hardware acceleration which usually means that the comercial non-open-source drivers of ATI or Nvidia to be installed and those can not be shiped with the GPL Linux.
- A distribution of Linux usually is made to last some time. People won't bother to download (much less install) a new version of the OS every month. That would conflict with Spring releasing new versions making the version of Spring in the live OS outdated.

Still, it would be seet.

Knoppix is a CD distro, isn't it? So it wouldn't need to be installed, just dl'ed and burnt.

Of course, distributing a free operating system with non-free content is a little strange. Perhaps using the "Xect vs. Mynn" mod to make it pure-free might be sensible.

Yah but when a new version is released that cd is obsolete, whats mroe what happens when the mdos and maps are updated or are no longer played because new mroe popular maps are released? Or AI's being updated, or crashbugs inkling in?

How're AI data, savegames, replays, logs supposed to be saved?

Re-Pathing would be annoying. It also probably wouldn't be worth the effort until the floating-point/(Windows and Linux) issues are resolved.

You could release diffs of the ISO. It dosen't have to be big either, knoppix can be torn down and become very small.
