I need help making a game

Post by tylerhryko »

Im making a game in C++ using an engine, Crystal Space. It's written in C++ and I have very little knowledge of programming. I need help in the following sections:
Research
3D modelling
Skinning
Programming
Animating
level design
concept art

The game will be similar to "Seek and destroy" For the PS2, minus the suck. It's a tank battle game, Where you can build (if that's the right choice of words) A tank. This will include arming it with various weapons- Only what the turret and chassis can handle- You will buy parts from numerous shops. Shops in certain areas will sell parts from that area. The tanks will be from real life and made up, the real life ones dating as far back as 1930. The tank you start off in will be a WWII era, With you choosing between certain ones (early panzer, Sherman, Cromwell, numerous scout vehicles, ect). The player stays in the tank at all times. the battles will have large numbers of tanks, And I hope to have the tanks more or less realistic. as you progress through it, More tanks will become available. A storyline has been laid out, But is still not final. The view will be a 3rd person, And the player will stay in the tank. The player will choose to travel to friendly towns and invade hostile ones by using a risk-like interface, Which the player chooses a town/mission from, and then it starts the gameplay.

Once again, I need help with this.

I dont really think age matters. I have worked on several mod teams for games like Battlefield 2 and Command and Conquer Generals as a modeller. I'm currently working with the Eve of Destruction (BF2), Battlefield 40k (BF2) and Blitzkrieg 2 (C&C) teams. If you want, I can post some of my work.

Go here and follow the path...
http://www.gamedev.net/reference/design ... efault.asp
You can't expect people to do what you say unless you offer them something.

edit: you should post this at a real gamedev site and count the flames... or just realise that you're 14 and have very little experience.

I may be young, but I am not that inexperiecned. I coded asteroids in flash actionscrip as a school project, I code visual basic as a hobby and, as I stated above, I am fairly experienced in 3D modelling for games.
Here is some of my work.

as someone who has begz0red my coding friends to make me games since before I was 14 I ... hey... that's my idea... ah well... mines different enough that people won't think I'm stealing it... anyways... yeah... the secret to begz0ring is to get someone to make a tiny little simple project for you, and then when they realise what you've done to them, the project is already finished and you can call yourselves a "developement group" and they have to keep helping you.

Ah the models look nice indeed. But still, you're aiming way too high. Sometimes aiming too high is good, as it can keep you motivated to do the things on the edge of your abilities, but you're overdoing that.

- If people are going to help you, it will be their game too, they decide the design too.
- You're aiming for PS2? Are you going to give expensive PS2 SDKs away anytime?
- What are people getting if they help you out? Some untextured models, and a design they wanted to make up? That's too small for anyone to commit to a project.

Ok,
It will be for the PC. I was just using that game as a reference.
Anyone who helps will have a say in design.
The models are not for the game. I was just showing some of my work.

VB = The Suckiest language in EXISTANCE. Heck, the only reason I personally still make any use of it is sometimes I want a calculator and can't be bothered googling one...

Visual Basic is a very good first programming language... it's Objective, structured, and has a good "bang for your buck" when it comes to effort to results ratio while introducing you to the MFC api(albeit indirectly)... If you don't have a course to teach you C++ it's pretty hard to come to it as your first programming language... VB is a great start... not a final destination mind you... but a good stepping stone.

I uses Visual Basic for my first games.
Only one of them ended in a stage you could call it a game engine (though very liminatly). But it doesn't require a lot of effort to create something visual.

Next to that, I could recommend Delphi, It kinda works the same way, only your options are far greater (and with DelpiX components, game making couldn't be easier).

I'm taking a C++ Class next year. my CP teacher has agreed to teach me on my free time if I choose, so I may be learning it soon.

tylerhryko, your modeling skills are definitly very good (put my attempts on making models for Rogue Spear to shame), however i'd like to see UV-mapped models and such before I can really judge on your skills.

as for a game, that might be overly ambitious, you might want to considder making a few mods your self to get the hang of development.
