I would never recommend to a computer hobbiest or gamer who is going to spend alot of time on an XP machine to have less then a gig of ram. If you spend that kind of time on your PC you will find lots of software you want to have open and you WILL knowtice the difference between a gig and 512. Similarly Vista is speced to run with a gig of ram, but if you log the time you're going to knowtice that you need 2 gig if you want it to preform the way you like. I very much doubt vista will run on less then 512MB from reading up exactly the way it works. Vista absolutly eats ram, it cycles out processor work by storing extra crap in the ram. You're gonna feel like a slug working with 512.

You already have a Windows in the computer you are already using, right?
Just install that Windows in the new computer you will buy. Windows brings the license to be used in one PC (which we don't accept nor know about before buying that sheet, anyway), it doesn't means that, once you used it in one PC, you can't change it to a new PC (legaly, you will have to uninstall it from the old computer).
Even though Microsoft likes people to think that they need to buy a new Windows whenever they by a new PC, that is not true, just re use the one oyu already have, not wasting money.
MuHAHaHAHAwindows vista

As usual, i recomend you to try Suse Linux and Ubuntu Linux.
Those are very solid distributions instead of some Linux distros which are mostly the Linux kernel patched together with a bunch of applications (there are many like that). Also, Suse is very Windows-geek-friendly.
I know that Suse has a Live CD (boots the OS from the CD, not needing a install). Just don't forget that, since it is running from the CD, it is much slower than a OS installed in the hard drive.
Although Suse (where i am writing this
) is my favourite, it definetly doesn't shines on speed, especialy in the boot time.
From my limited experience with Ubuntu, it showed a fantastic performance in the desktop, opening windows lightning fast and stuff.
XP (the one i know best. I am a qualified Windows networks engineer) will deliver the best performance for sure .. for the first 5 days until you are swarmed with virus, spyware, addware, etcware. You will also see empty partitions in your hard drive saying that they have like 700 MBs ocupied with nothing in there nor in the recicle bin, folders of garbage starting to grow with you not knowing why or where, etc. Even with anti-virus and firewall installed, the performance of Windows degrages seriously over time.
All of the three can be costumized to .. whatever, with Linuxes beeing, by far, the most costumizable.
Companies aren't making yet enough game for Linux (or even macintosh). You can find good games for Linux, like UT2004, Doom3, Quake4, Neverwinter Nights, etc, etc, etc. But you won't find them all. Genders especially lacking in Linux is mmoRPGs and RTSs. To run many games in Linux, you would have to recur to emulators and stuff like wine and cedega. That «emulating and stuff» would give you extra work and, even then, you wouldn't be able to run all games.
Games i am, currently, waiting for to, most probably, buy:
- Savage 2 (confirmed to have a Linux port)
- The new RPG, yet unnamed, that Bioware (who made Neverwinter Nights) is going to make
- I am also considering buying Neverwinter
And as said before, Linux is not harder to learn than Windows, it just happens that everyone already knows Windows and, so, they think it is easier when they see that weird looking Linux.

As said, it will vary greatly.Sheekel wrote:... Which OS will give better performance?

Linux works great for everything else but, still, the major issue with Linux is still gaming.Sheekel wrote:... gaming ...

Me desktop
Each crazy penguin in the desktop is a link to a game or game demo.

Suse gives you the YAST control center.
It will allow you to easily and centrally manage almost your entire OS (this is a big thing since one of the greatest issues of Linux was managing it).
From there install more stuff that you had in the CDs/DVD or on a Internet public repository of software, or uninstall it. Use a partitioner. Share files and folders with Windows or other Linuxes. Configure servers. Etc, etc, etc.
Also, one of the greatest parts of it is the YOU (Yast Online Update), that can download and install updates for the stuff you have installed (like Windows Update except that Windoes Update will only update Microsoft's stuff while YOU will update everything you installed from YAST). You can see it, it is the green lizard on the bottom right (red when you have security updates to install, yellow when it can't connect to master server).

One of the most charming little games i have ever had the pleasure of finding. Try it yourself and be damned if it doesn't brings you good vibes:FizWizz wrote:Professor FizzWizzle?! and what is that?
