Make secret mods

Post by wwyyy »

so that we have more mods but they don't show the wrench symbol in player list and it doesnt announce in chan who moderated an action. sort of a psychological thing. people can't wait until the mods are gone to spam because they don't know where big brother is watching them from

I think it has gotten to the stage where you need atleast 1-2 mods in each major timezone. Good lord, the idiots in those channels. I'd love to be able to fetch my mallet...

I read your post thinking you were talking mods as in AA instead of Mods as in a moderator. I got kind of confused.

I like the idea of secret mods though, just to keep anyone who is trying to take advantage of the system guessing.

Just have it (sortof) like on IRC then, give mods the right to +o themselves (operator status). On IRC, it's already a warning if you see e.g. "* Tobi sets mode +o.", because you know he can kick/ban/kickban after that.

This way, it's not obvious who is mod and who isn't, but as soon as you start misbehaving, mods give themselves operator privs and kick/ban/kickban you.

Don't think this'll work

1) Fools are fools. Period. Easy as that.

2) Those fools just don't learn

3) You'll have to be into IRC etc to even understand what's about to happen

I like the secret mod idea :)

Well, you can make it a little more verbose. Like "user gains kick privilege" :D

Even if the fools still don't understand, you still have secret mods until they start kicking/banning.

I think secret mods are a bit silly.

The best discouragement is to have atleast 1 active guy all the time (by dividing up mod duties between timezones), with a big @ or something next to his name. Then people know, if they misbehave, they are heading for the door.

The Guards standing outside banks are more of a discouragement then an actual defence mechanism.

I think you should just set down a series of hard and fast rules for the main channel, spelling out exactly what is on, and what isn't. Link to it in the main channel, or force users to read the rules before agreeing to install Spring.

Then, rule with an iron fist within those rules. If someone is vulgar, out the door. If someone spams, out the door. If someone is racist or inflammatory, out the door. If they do it again, it's a week's ban. If they do it again, they're gone.

If people don't like the rules, they can start their own channels, and spam away to their hearts content.

That is how the Gnugs run channel #gnug, and the result is that it is the most popular TA IRC channel, as well as the most friendly and helpful place to go if you wish to learn to play TA, or organise games.

I agree with the Warlord. Now if only there was some way of MELTING the CPU of repeat offenders from miles and miles away, then it would be perfect. I think secret mods will just make things worse, as offenders would go like "Why am I booted! I am going to complain that I was booted randomly!" and be a nuisance.

Well more of a nuisances then they already are.

It looks very likely that that wierd IRL thing will be stealing me for the majority of the next year. I probably won't have as much time for forum moderation and very very little time to acctually play games/moderate client. It's likely that we would have needed to hire more mods anyways but hopefully now we have a good excuse.

Hopefully betalord can get an ignore feature worked up for client anyways. I'm sure there's a few people that some of the users here would love to just not have to hear anything out of.

I agree that we should have a mod or at least a votekick feature like you find in games such as america's army. Some times when you're in the lobby its not a particularly nice experience
