Camera Viewpoints

Post by Corbeau »

I've been meaning to ask this for a while: how many of you out there use camera modes other than the standard TA view?

Personally, I exclusively use the free-rotating camera. It's strictly better once you get the hang of it, and I've been a longtime Myth player so the learning curve was very short. However, I know at least one friend who just uses the default view and I suspect that many others do so as well.

TA style all the way, unless I'm modding. Then its usually FPS/free rotate.

I use TA mode but I tilt it a bit with ctrl + mousewheel.

I don't like rotatable overhead camera because I always get disoriented.

But TA mode tilted is pretty much the same thing but without disorienting rotation.

I like TA view. It works. The only thing that's a little annoying is that it can be hard to tell when things can or cannot fire over stuff, but you quickly work out the common situations. (IE, if it's possible to cause friendly fire damage, your units will find some way to do it. ;) )

I love rotatable. It's so completely awesome. You can see so far with it, and really keep tabs on what is going on a lot easier. I can look far off in the distance and see explosions WAY outside my LOS, and can tell if other players are fighting eachother, and where it is happening... Then I get to fuck the winner of that little confrontation.

I use FPS mode exclusively. Mainly because I'm an old fps player and I like camera controls in games like homeworld and ground control, and its exactley the same controls as the hammer editor for half-life 2

That's what I meant; When I want to move the view around, I hit J and do it with the mouse, but I scroll across the world with the arrow keys. So I guess it's a combination of rotatable overhead and FPS, though rarely do I FPS into a unit.

I've been sticking with TA. Most rts are like it so i just use that.

The FPS one sounds interesting. I also play hl2 and have used hammer alot. Never tried fps, I might try it. I havent really tried Rotateable either. Probably because i dont really know the controls.

I use the Total War camera, but in the heat of battle it can get disorienting; so for that I'll switch to TA camera. Nothing shows height better than the TW camera system, in my opinion. Especially if you can't render shadows.

I love the Rotatable Overhead Camera. I dont rotate it that much, so its easy to keep track of where I am, but if you do need to look round, its just so much easier. Plus, the TA view is so restrictive, and you cant see much even at max zoom.

I love Total War, but I can't stand the ridiculously slow scroll speed, about which I complained some time ago.

Now I use TA Overhead exclusively; it gives the widest picture of the battlefield and scrolls around faster than all of the others.

Even when holding down shift? I find that makes all of the scroll modes rediculously zippy.

Shift doesn't work properly in the Total War camera mode, IIRC.

However, being a regular user of CAD programs, I am quite familiar with using the middle mouse button as a pan button; which I was very impressed to find working in Spring.

The camera rotation speed is a bit high in some of the low-down views... and yes the scroll speed is way too slow.

FPS mode.

but recently it seems like something has changed all of the camera controlls for the worse... I am not exactly sure but it just "feels off"

kinda like this sounds:

I use the Total War camera most of the time, since it is easy to change the angle and rotate the camera with the mouse. The Rotatable is nice though when trying to manage allot at once.

Personally, i think FPS view kicks ass. I mean, the feeling when your little raid group of gators drive by the camera, first looking really big, then almost disappearing in the fray of battle far away.
'Cept this totally sucks for micromanagement, as you will select the wrong units because of the selection spheres overlapping in the distance, and the fact that scrolling around with the minimap will leave you really disoriented.

So generally i use standard TA view.
