FPS mode; a request and a bug

Post by Strategia »

OK, so first off lemme tell you that from the moment I first found out about the FPS mode and first tried it, I have been in love with it. Whenever my base is attacked early on, I climb into my Comm or my first defense installation and blast away. Later, I love to build an air or ground assault force, tell it to guard a single unit and use that unit to lead an airstrike or ground attack. Nothing like seeing your Freedom Fighters and Thunders zoom past you and blowing up enemy defenses so the Brawler you're in can zoom into the base and start taking out mexxes and solars.

Therefore, I have a request to make.

As it is, you can only use FPS mode on a unit with a weapon; eg, you can climb into a Jeffy but you can't climb into a Peeper. Can this be changed? I know you won't be able to shoot anything in a weaponless unit, but I still want to be able to climb into that Peeper and find the enemy. Also, the way it is, the only way you can take radar along with you (stock game) is by telling a radar vec/plane to Guard the unit you're in; but I'd prefer to sit inside that Eagle myself and have the rest of my airforce guard it, then tell it to guard another aircraft only to fly straight into the maw of the enemy AA.

Also, there is a rather annoying (and potentially deadly) (well for the unity you're in at least) bug in FPS mode; Somehow, whenever you aim your turret towards the area between the north (0 degrees) and the west (270 degrees), it points northward. So, you can't fire on a unit to the nortwest of your position unless you switch on Free Fire. This bug is especially irritating in planes; they fly northward and cannot maneuver to the west when doing so, unless you point your nose towards the southwest quarter of the compass. Can somebody please find out how this happened and if there is a way to fix it?

Oooh yeah, controlling any unit would be useful, and that bug is just plain irritating.

I have a couple of extra things to ask though: Would it be possible to allow player-controlled units to fire at friendlies? I ask because it's annoying when a friendly stands too close to your line of fire so you can't shoot past them. I mean, what would be the disadvantage of allowing players to shoot their own units anyway?
The other thing is related to the viewpoint you get when controlling a unit. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that the view is from the centre of the controlled unit. Could it be placed at the top, to better allow the player to navigate through crowds?

Anyways, FPS mode rocks and there's silly amounts of fun to be had leading an huge army into battle in a krogoth. :-) - So nice one to whoever's idea that was. 8)

I'd like the mouse-controlling to be smoother, not based on rather large increments.

The viewpoint is the turret center. The piece given in the script in AimFromPrimary(piecename){...}. Which is probably why units with no weapons can't be FPS'ed.

You should be able to fire at everything. I mean, you cant shoot your big-ass plasma cannon cause some tiny tree or piece of garbage in in the way? Not cool.
And ive found that sometimes your cursur will move all they way to the right of the screen for absolutely no reason. Very annoying when your trying to shoot somthing.
And controlling a con bot and using a nano stream as a weapon? Would be wicked. Needs to make sure it builds onto/repairs ally units amd reclaims enemy units/garbage though.
