Topic moderation

Post by Azu »

This topic is aimed at the developers of this website, if you do not work on the forum/are not a mod or admin, then do not reply to this topic, only vote, thank you. This is meant simply as a poll not a discussion.

Make it so we can moderate our own topics to delete spam posts in them so trolls cannot derail it and take it offtopic or into flaming hell. And have an option to make a poll "Vote only" so that people can only vote in it, rather then post. Most forums already have this feature and it is very useful for preventing spam.

I'm not an administrator, but what you ask for is moderator access.. and frankly, I find that a bad idea.

so I voted no, and sighed...

whats wrong with that??

there's no "rule" that states I cannot discuss your post here... only you trying to give yourself moderator access and providing your own rules over threads.

Consider this post a protest to your idea.

btw, yer breaking your own rules too.

So you want the ability to censor people who disagree with your viewpoint?

Image guess what, it's Azu!

Whatever.
I just want to avoid spam and flames.
Do you have something to contribute to the topic? If not, why post?

Okay, the purpose of this would be if someone starts saying "Omg fuck you all lol hahaha", the maker of the thread could just delete it to avoid a flame war. That isn't cencorship, it's common sense.

The ability to delete posts in ones own thread is a power that can, infact will, be abused if implemented.

However, the option to make a poll 'vote only' is a good idea.

If someone says "Omg fuck you all lol hahaha" in a thread...

You do realise we actually have moderators here who can and will delete such posts when they find them?

They don't though. They just lock the entire topic. *Blinks*

And what is wrong with the poll only check box idea?

There are forums out there that allow users moderation rights in thier own topics, and client chat channels allow the creators moderation rights in them as well... There are 2 reasons we don't do this

A) Forum code for this forum doesn't support it.

B) We don't want to have to moderate for rules as to what you can and can't do with yout topic moderation rights as well as the set of rules that we already moderate, expecially if most thread posters choose to only pick on other people with thier rights rather then acctually helping us do our jobs.

I'd second that. Other than dev time, does anyone have any objections? I know that dev time is important, I'm just trying to figure out if there are any other objections.

If anyone who created a thread had the power to moderate any subsequent post in his thread, then people would just delete all posts that disagree with them. Like, if someone made a thread about a new map, which was complete crap, he could get edgy about negative feedback and kill them all, keeping only the praise posts, which would completly twist the apparent reception of his map.

I don't like vote-only thread, because sometimes the one who makes the poll forget some choices.

Plus board are a place of discussion, and it's natural for discussion to drift a little bit from what the first speaker said. Where's the "discussion" an "getting idea and opinion from others" parts when every possible outcome is fixed in stone by the first post? Why post in a forum in the first place if you're not willing to deal with others replies and reactions?

I just think topic starters should have the right to delete flame bait, that's all. And sometimes people just want to have a poll and do not want a discussion about it.

If we wanted that as a forum option it could be hardcoded... However we really don't...
