the problem lies in the fact that OTA doesn't use hardware acceleration in the first place, so it relies on the processor for mostly everything. Its humbling hearing that an athlon64 x2 couldn't even do it, i think that says a lot for a game made in 1997 for PCs running at 133mhz

It was made in 1997, i mean, most games didn't use 3D acceleration then.

Indeed, accelerated games came out around 1999 I think (Half-Life FTW!)
Back then, Average computers didn't had any 3d card.

I remember the enormous amount of memory you actually needed for a game with more then 200 units in total. my poor Pentium 1 with 150 mhz and a whooping 32mb ram (my Ipod nano has the same) couldn't handle too many units. Later on, on a P2 233 mhz with 64mb ram, couldn't handle even 400. I think, I finally now have a computer that could handle 1000 units (or more, never tried) in OTA.

The biggest CPU hog is pathfinding. My computer starts choking when I give a move order to 50 units, let alone 4550.

Then again, my geforce mx 400 and 1.8ghz cpu aren't exactly top notch >_>

Wrong answer. It means that the OTA scales really well and was way ahead of its time.

On four player OTA (on the large moon map with the dark and light sides) I once managed 3500 units plus whatever the other three players had. My PC could handle it but their game became unplayable and that was the end of that.

I did also crash my machine with a huge (maybe 1000+) aircraft battle using WD on OTA and once when sending in a huge fleet on 7 Isles (using these gattling-plasma cannon arm cruisers) though that was with my old Barton XP2500 as opposed to the 3200 64bit I've got at the moment.

Well, at least somebody has survived a 1000+ unit battle and lived to tell the tail...

I once play a game vs 10 ais and won. I think most had about 500 units.

I also played a game with a friend in which we each had about 3,500 units. Both games were on "Over Crude Water."
