What is wrong with the Spring server!?!?!?!?

Post by hrmph »

I can only connect to the spring website maybe one try out of ten or fifteen. Half the time when I do get connected after surfing the forum for awhile the connection cuts out again. With the lobby I have almost the same situation. If I stay connected I won't be disconnected automatically; but half the time when I leave and try to reconnect I cannot. Probably along the the same one attempt out of ten or fifteen makes it... What is the issue? I've heard other people are having the same problem, is there anything that can be done about it? An alternative host perhaps?? I hate to think that lots of new users are experiencing this and deciding to not even try spring out.

Im on dial up, and I have no such problem. Mabye check what internet the other people have and see if it has to do with the connection, its not the spring server I know that.

Well something is loopy. What country are you in lordo? When doing a traceroute from another machine on another isp to taspring.clan-sy.com the packets never reach their destination. When I do a traceroute from my own machine the packet eventually reaches taspring.clan-sy.com but reports many 'query name errors' (DNS errors) from nameservers along the way (like 7 plus).

Note: The below happens until I manually shutdown the attempt.. I've let it run for 10 minutes with the same result. Leaving it running for longer one time it finally timed out at 30.

Code: Select all

This is not an isolated event... Bigsteve even commented as to how there are very few Americans on the lobby today (I'm thinking this is why)...
Here is a chat excerpt showing other people with the same problem (Note, Aun is in Great Britain, Sabutai is in Germany, and Ranma/Mother are in America):

Code: Select all

[2:22:24 PM] <hrmph> ive been having extreme network problems connecting to the spring servers
[2:22:31 PM] <Aun> me too
[2:22:39 PM] <Sabutai> so have i
[2:23:15 PM] <Aun> the website and the server seem like they're down for a while, but when i connect there a re a lot of people on

[2:33:10 PM] <Aun> ah ha!
[2:33:16 PM] <hrmph> Ranma: how long did it take you how many attempts?
[2:34:23 PM] <Aun> timeout from hong kong

[2:34:31 PM] <hrmph> mother: ?
[2:34:59 PM] <mother> tried to respond to your thead b4
[2:35:07 PM] <mother> but by the time I hit preview the server went away
[2:35:23 PM] <hrmph> have you been having problems with the lobby too?
[2:35:59 PM] <mother> not the lobby so much as the website
[2:36:21 PM] <hrmph> for me it happens to both, the lobby only connects like one try out of 10 or 15
[2:36:54 PM] <Aun> i have the same problem as hrmph
Yet another - "[3:08:41 PM] <Zerzera> anyone else having trouble connecting to taspring.clan-sy.com?"

And another - "[3:33:00 PM] <Shifty_Powers> was the server down earlyer?"

Same for me. Usually it doesn't work, and starts working only after I add some random DNS servers from http://80.247.230.136/dns.htm to /etc/resolv.conf (running linux) and ping the server.

Found an interesting blurb... but to be honest this doesn't explain the problem.
Network Status
Last Update Time: 3/23/06 06:00 am EST

There was a problem with a DDOS against ns3 which only lasted 45 minutes, but the ISP null routed (i.e. blocked) not just ns3, but all of the servers we have on their network, which they say they will lift after 7 days. We are currently in the process of setting up new boxes at a new facility, but unfortunately it's taking somewhat longer than it has in past. We expect to restore full service within 24-48 hours. All zones have DNS service provided by at least two distinct locations, so DNS for the affected zones should operate normally using the second nameserver.

If you depend on reliable DNS service, we recommend logging into your account, clicking on "Nameservers" and purchasing a "tertiary" nameserver. 3 nameservers are exponentially more reliable than 2 nameservers.
I am however willing to bet that zoneedit is otherwise screwing the pooch here.

EDIT: FWIW clan-sy.com has 2 registered nameservers, one of which is the above ns3.

It works fine everytime if you just put in the ip directly. I can't connect at all when I use the namespace.

This is completely un-true. I've tried the IP several times when experiencing the problem, all with the same effect.
