Drifting Problem with dontland=1 tag

Post by Optimus Prime »

Hi

i added the dontland=1 tag to most units of FF so that they stay in air. But now units drift after shooting an enemy or when hitting s (stop)after an attack. I noticed that the drift is much stonger when increasing the acceleration, but i still reduced the acceleration to a small value and the drift is still very bad. Any solutions?

Probably no solution, it's not a very polished tag yet... Maybe with the next version it'll be fixed up a bit.

Yes they drift, but units completely fixed in the air won't look very good either imo. What would you and caydr like to see for those units? (FF and GEM are probably the only users for it now anyway).

How about a little weaving in movment? Where the ships just kinda float around a little in all directions. This could also be applied to hovercraft, have them move up and down a little to simulate less-than-perfect attitude control. An FBI tag for the power of the effect in each axis would be useful. Defaults could be set to what they are now for compatibility.

But the current behavior is ok as long as the unit doesn't shoot?

SWS will probably use this tag for a few aircraft.

Perhaps the aircraft simply circles the site (assuming it isn't of a gunship class)? As if it had been given a patrol order; only at that spot.

you have to decrease the acceleration to very small values. Than constructors are ok, but for war units it can be very annoying.
I decreased the acceleration to values smaller than 0.03 and even then in battles the units sometimes drift more than a half screen on max zoom out level in any direction. That can be very dangerous ;)
With high accelerations (higher than 0.1) they sometimes drift without shooting.
So it would be very nice, if you can fi that for the future versions. Its playable like it is and i like the dontland tag, but it would be much cooler without these drifts and without so small accelerations.

Actually I was trying to use it too for WD (obviously, I mention WD in 90% of my post! lol).

It works fine on helicopters, they hover and even move around a little bit but on aircraft it's a bit odd, they just aimlessly fly around, hitting hills.

I would like to see a TA style hover mode, press stop to force them to land and all that...

I think really it shouldn't stay still but just kinda like sway from side to side slowly that would look much more realistic and much nicer in my opinion.

thats already in. Units dont stand still like groundunits, they hover a bit if you have a look at them ;).
