TA still is the best RTS game ever... So it's about time a better RTS comes a long :)

Supreme Commander is "supposedly" coming out 6/1/06 or just sometime this June. Got your proof right here:

Just look over to the left where it says release date under Supreme Commander. Oh, and Supreme Commander is gonna be awsome. If you don't like the game, then just make a Total Annihilation mod for it. Chris Taylor states that his game will be very modable. Also, there are going to be lots of super units and that such. Now don't go thinking these things have to be clumsy because they are too big. Chris Taylor decided he should add lots of new physics that allow even the biggest units walk real smoothly. I'm sure you already knew this, but the big units can stomp on the little ones. This might suck because it would also kill your own army so think again when you decide to have an army of munchkins backing up the uber units. :wink:

I've already gotten the implmentation of a grouPAi with several SupCom features in it planned out and ready to implement when I have the time.

Spring will absorb whatever advantages supcom has over it and surpass it...

Sure, I hope that Spring will soon become the best rts ever, but I hope that it doesn't get too good because that could put Chris Taylor's buisiness (the creator of all TA games and what started TA Spring) out of buisiness. But of coarse then people will realise that TA Spring is based on Total Annihilation and then people will want more from his buisiness. Oh, and someone on the GPG forums said that SupCom will have 4000x4000 maps which is rediculously huge. Here is a picture of the scale of SupCom's maps.

And by the looks of it, I'de say a map that big would take about 5 hours to fly across lol. This may not be the REAL scale but I'm sure it's something like that.

I think this can be very cool for single player games (something like campaigns, with a story, prebuilt armies, etc), but would it be a benefit for multiplayer ?

In a multiplayer game I do not think the complexity grows linear with the size (the best example is chess that on 64 squares is very complex). On such a big map, if a player has much more skill than others it will evolve and kill more players (but this can happen now, is that different to kill 2-3 inexperienced players compared to 10 ?). If all the players have almost the same skill the game can be too lengthy (even now in longer games, some drop, maybe because of internet connections, maybe they've got other things to do).

And I do not want to see a thread about 'quit to early' on such a map :-) . Imagine: "I built the army for 4 h, got it across the map in 2 h, and then the other player quit because his army was somewhere else".

Other than that map looks really good and I think it will be an enjoyable single player experience. I hope that someday the single player will evolve also in Spring (maybe some moders will switch to campaign building when the engine will be able to support more featureS), but the multiplayer is so good but still can be improved, so it's better to be the best multiplayer first.

Lol. I just got the craziest, but very fun sounding, idea. Since the maps will be so big, there could be one server for each map and the servers will always be on. People could join anytime they wanted to and try and take enemy territories. When you leave, your army will not be destroyed but saved for the next time you want to come back and play. Your base could still get destroyed while your gone so the server could start you with a new commander. The servers could hold up to as many people as you want it to and start positions would be where there is open, nuetral land. Sounds like a crazy idea but I think that would be the funnest multiplayer game type ever. There would always be some kind of fight going on and you could ally with others in game. It would be like epic conquest mode or something.

I'm confident its going to be amazing. Its fucking chris taylor godammit.
And for whats released already, the storyline is pretty good, having no obvious good or evil side (though its problably earth heh), and those graphics simply look dead sexy, pretty original to have the maps so huge, like realisticly war bases arent usually right beside each other like in TA.

theres a awesome 6 page preview in pc zone this month (over in the uk)

ill try scanning it when i get the chance, theres some kick arse stuff revealed in the preview :-)

ok here goes - few things mentioned in the preview (ill re-word the whole thing)

* supreme commander is fully upgradeable - defensive/offensive augs whatever suits you. mentioned jump jets/shield systems

* resources come in the form of war mass (which is used to build units with) extracted from underground wells or by energy generated by reactors. resources are infinite (As in they dont diminish - same as TA)

* everything is in scale - so for example barrels on a heavy tank are the same size as AA guns on a battleship

* mention of a battleship with 4 aa guns, 3 huge main cannons and 2 anti-missile turrets

* lots of mentions of relation to realism - such as battleship sagging backwards when their guns fire off, smaller units can go under the legs of bigger units :-)

* can set up move/monitor patrol routes at the press of a button (much like TA i guess)

* ability to queue up build orders for weapon factories still under construction (even if there not being currently built :shock: ), also be able to see when each new unit can enter the fray

* guess people know this but just incase - 3 different factions the UEF, cybrans, aeons. mentions the style of there units

so, UEF = more human/familiar weaponry - heavy tanks/bombers/battleships etc
cybrans = robotic, so there stuff looks like alien including them spider walkers
aeons = possess sleek, simple single weapon units

* mention of a unit that can convince the enemy that theres a large force bearing down on its base, when its just the one unit :shock: (that sounds sweet as)

* 3 campaigns - comprise of 6/7 operations. each operation has between 2 and 5 missions

* you dont start with a base - sup comm uses a quantam tunnel to appear on the planet and then you start building (same as TAspring multiplayer then basically)

* a unit called the base commander (to me, this sounds awesome) that can be upgraded, it will remember where every factory in your base is, so if its attacked/destroyed it will automatically rebuild your base without you telling it to do so - aim is to remove micro'ing your base so you can concetrate on the front line

* theres 2 paragraphs on a fight involving aircraft/ships that there demonstrated, as well as mention of a nuke sub :-)

* experimental weapons!

the aeon can build there most devastating unit which is basically a huge ufo like the one outta independance day, can be used as a transport vessel and has a huge beam of death

uef have a mobile tank factory (someone steal a idea off here
:lol: ) - can go across any terrain, can be driven along the sea floor for example. it has battleship guns to defend itself and a air service facility

movement and attack eta and lines like in spring.

the 4kx4k maps dont seem that spectacular nwo we've sene examples of zaphods new terrain renderer which tiself has a 2kx2k gameplay zone on a map with a total size of 4kx4k, and thats v1, combined with SJ's new water renderer it should look far better than supcom given a good dose of features and mapping talent.

otherwise a lot of that supcom stuff is already in spring, such as the commands given to unfinished units.

The idea of a walking tank factory with battleship guns air servicing, that can walk on the seafloor is amazing though...

The Base Commander sounds like a Group AI waiting to be written, and it is only a matter of time before someone like Zwzsg writes up the script for the Swiss Army Factory (It's got every function rolled into one =P). unit upgrades are an interesting feature that several people have already been pushing for in Spring already.

you guys, just saw a magazine cover the other day... yeah bout supcom, and ROFL, the commander wields a sword and is HUGE and walks the battlefield with his sword swinging, its just like DS metal commander of doom

Wonder if there is going to be chests and enemys drop items...

i want mmorpg style, and carry my army in the commanders pocket, so i can trade units in unit trading post..

I think that SupCom will beat all strat games which exist at the time the game comes out. The grafics are awesome.
Only the weaponeffects make me smile about spring ;)
There is so much in SC which is unbeatable. The sizes (i LOVE games with realistic sizes), the maps, the units and so on.
The main plus will be the moddability like TA was.

BUT i think that spring will be at this time (1 year i guess) much more improved as it is now. We will have better weapon effects, better performance, better maps, better pathfinding :D and better mods with better units (grafically). So spring will be for all people who cant play SupCom (which are a lot i think) and for those, who like to play more than one game at once (like me ;)).

[thats what i believe will happen]

well, imho the idea that you can queue stuff up in a building that isn't even being built would be great, too. Like a keyboard key that makes all queued buildings show up so you can order them to do stuff

Aye, by the time Supcom comes out, Spring will be improved as well.
As Alantai mentioned, great things are comming.

Of course I'm going to play subcom, just like Spore. Won't replace Spring to me though ^.^
