Oh well. The presenter said that all the different sub-games (city builder, creature builder, vehicle builder) would only be simplified models of their more sophisticated counter-parts (like sim-city, creatures, warzone2110) and the meta-game of galaxy colonization and conquest can be had in many games today already.

So what this game does is take a series of role-modles from other games and combine them into one. I bet Spore will get boring fast once you have tried all levels of gameplay, scince it really doesnt offer much innovation but the fact that you can play all kinds of games in one game.

Plus, it looks so fucking horribly childish that my eyes bleed.

But it would make a good tutorial for kids on how the evolution works.

The fun thing is actually creating your own species and playing around with them, also building cities that can look like anything. Like a huge sandbox mode.

Definately one to watch. I'll yet more impressed if characteristics gained in previous stages continue to have influence later in the game.

Hello Mr. Missed-the-point! You can desinge any thing and everything, from your spice's to your spaceships to your tanks. You can make them childish, scary, violent or whatever the hell you want them to look. You can make a zerg rip off race and terrorize your galaxy. Or you could build a cudly fuzz bear race...that will of course be torn to shreads by your zerg race :lol:

This is a year old video and within the span of a week I've seen it posted on 3 of the forums I browse... Was this linked on slashdot or something? Why is this exploding all of a sudden now when it's been around for so long already?

It looks like an extreamly promising concept. I'm expecially excited about what it does procedurally. I think there's alot of room in the industry to expound off of procedurally generated and manipulated content.

I think it would be fun to see how open the engine really is. In that video, creatures evolved from under the sea, and then went onto land. Would it be possible to make the creatures evolve totally underwater? Amphibious? What about making massive cities, or making a city world like Coruscant from Starwars? Pushing the engine to its limits is what I will be doing. Sure, making creatures with 10 legs each with 2 feet is fun, but as they said, thats just an interesting walk animation. Seeing what the game does when you have a weapons on its one foot, so it cant walk while attacking, that will be interesting. Plus watching it feebly hop around will be a laugh :P

Actually...yes you can have anphibious creatures. When you build citys on land they are in domes filled with water

Holy... well there is a game where developers made content for. Instead of graphics only, good marketing and we make money.

Man, this is one game I look forward to.

I just saw pictures of it before, this video is much better. I'm really looking forward to playing around with this game.

However the last sub-game you end up with determines if you're actually going to play spore for a longer time, and I doubt that the final space game is going to be that much fun.

Procedurally generated gamedata is the real innovation though, something that is only seen in the demoscene so far. If more games will be taking that way it will be very interesting. (And also the only way we are going to get bigger and nicer environments, because there is a (financial) limit on the number of designers you can put on a game.

Ok, and now we stop the fanboying again and look at the facts we have.

The presenter said that the game uses procdurally generated textures.
That means that within the constraints of these procedures, you will have a limited number of combinations and iterations of textures for every 3d-model in the game. More importantly, you will not be able to design your own textures, without external modding, as they are automatically generated.

Also, when tinkering with any of the 3d-models, you will be limited to the parts the editors have to offer, which are not procedurally generated but you pick objects from a tool-box. Additionally, the editor seems to include limited 3d-design functionality, provided by basic shapes.

Essentially, what the devs do is to transport a part of the development over to the player´s sphere of interaction. So, as you can now create a mod for many games, to acustom them to your liking, you can then create variations of the objects in "Spore" while actually playing the game, instead of making an external mod. The result, however, is the same.

The presenter also said, that all those editors are very simple and more like "Sandboxes", thus you only have limited ability to change the content, for example you will most likely only be able to tinker with provided 3d-modles instead of creating a whole new one without external modding of the game.

In short, i did not miss the point of this game at all, but i can understand why you are very enthusiastic about it. But i will without a doubt be no complete development environment, which you would need to have total creational freedom, but a simplified version of a developers tool-box.

Afterall, its for kids.

What Masse said, just better spelled and more grammatical coherent. Also SPORE is the kind of game that shows why PC's are just flat out better then consoles. I mean think about it. Could you play this on an X-box, or a Gamecube? Would console gamers really play this game, or just gobble up some new brainless shooter clone (Note: My views are colored by the TRAVESTY of Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. Take a ultra deep, uber cool RPG with a massive world, a great plot and the most creepy ass villein i have ever seen, and then port it to the X-box, take every single cool think i mentioned before and turn it into a Deiablo clone. Yeah...thats why i hate consoles). Also just think of the creativity that this game will spark. Some people look at it and see a simplified tool box. Some people looked at The Movies and saw a simplistic excuse to make slapstick five minuet skits and giggle at like a five year old. Then movies like VAL, or the Lift series started coming out, with superb voice acting and genius use of cutting. They are good MOVIES not just cartoons. I'm sure within weeks of Spore's release the Internet will be flooded with crap. But there will be a few gems of unique beauty and coolness. Alien race's i would never of imagined, but someone just pulled out there head. Creatures beyond my wildest imaginations, weird monsters, fairy tail beings and hideous things that escape description will come forth and i will have fun subjugating them with my fleet of horribly beweaponed space fleets.

But, hey, thats just me :)

Andreask: You need to understand will write's bacground in gaming. He's the guy who created Sims2, the game that 90% of it's success is based off of the ability for players to share things they have created in game with eachother. Spore is the far end embodyment of this. They built a procedurally generated 3D engine that can literally build and animate virtually any creature that a player could come up with, and in the end you have a game world where players can build just insane things in terms of content and the developers have to build relitively little as far as modeling and texturing goes.

Even if they didn't create any more architypes since that video was shown a year ago the range of creatures that was possible then is astonishing, and definately something I'd like to play with.

I had a short period of time I was addicted to the sims, but not being the most imaginitive player of games in the world I found the initial novelty wore off. Sims2 didn't really catch me at all, it was just a more polished version of what I had already done to death.

However spore is DEFINATELY not sims. I can't imagine being unescapably addicted, but I plan to have fun playing it anyways. It does things that house building and managing never could for me :D
