Visual glitch and lockup [resolved]

Post by Nibbles »

I recently did a clean install of Spring v72b and all my mods and AIs.

While playing, usually between 5 and 10 minutes of gameplay, the screen suddenly scrambles into random multicolored vertical lines and locks up the game. It happens randomly but inevitably every time I play a skirmish game. The only way to solve it is to manually reboot the computer.

No matter what configuration I use, this same crash occurs. It did not occur for over 10 minutes when I ran the airbattle script, but every time I play a full-blown skirmish game it happens pretty quickly. I tried FF, XTA and AA- same thing each time. Tried different AIs, no effect.

This has happened when my units were attacking the enemy, but that was not always the case. The only commonality is that it seems to occur when I am trying to build something, but this could be coincidence. I am fairly certain that every time it happened I had a building selected to place it on the map, but I'm not sure this is the problem.

Spring is essentially unplayable because of this, and I haven't found anything that has fixed it or reduced its chances. I have had no problems with any other games so far, only Spring.

AMD Barton 1.8 GHz
Radeon 8500 64Mb AGP (newest catalyst drivers, no tweaks)
512 Mb DDRRAM
Windows 2000 SP4
Plenty of HD space and no crap on my PC.

I'll mess around with it a bit more and run the scripts longer and a game with no AIs, cut back all visual settings, use it without SP, see if I can find anything that works.

Edit- I finally reproduced the error in DoD: source. It's almost definately my video card frying. Again. Spring just pushed it over the edge sooner.

Third ATI card to burn up on me in one year. I am never buying another ATI product as long as I fucking live.
