Harware horror house!

Post by Zoombie »

So i just got a new vidio card (Its a 6800 xfx gs geforce nivida whatnot thingy doddle) from my freind when his dad accidently drilled a hole through his motherbord....don't...just don't ask...

anyway, i installed his 6800 xfx gs geforce nivida whatnot thingy doddle and suddenly...IT DIDNT WORK! It also made a high pitched screetchy thing. So we bought a new power source, because we found that that was the problem. The card was geting not enough power.

Then it didnt work AGAIN and i had 80 less dollers. Frustrated i found out that my freind had forgotten to tell me...HIS CARD IS A PCI! I had a AGP thiggy, so it would slide in but not work. I was despondant (cause its a really nice card). Then i was told that you could but it in AGP format.

Huzza's were in order.

Then that card didnt work. The entire computer wouldent boot up, and i was close to tears. Then i noticed something. The CPU fan had come unplugged. I plugged it back in and it worked. Now i have a kickawsome 6800 xfx gs geforce nivida whatnot thingy doddle wiggy in my pc and no one can stop me!

So why dont you share your hillarious storys of hardware horror. Or are you lucky, and never had to deal with it?

Tell the story of the hole being drilled, I can't miss out on this one.

His card was PCI, or PCI-express? There's a massive difference.

I flicked a switch on my comp and blew the PSU and the whole computer went bang with smoke and sparks.

It was a PCI... and no i really didnt ask about the hole being drilled. I think it was something to do with there power supplie...whitch dosent make much sence, now that i have changed my own power supplie.

A long time ago I managed to make a pentium 2 cpu, bubble. It was really cool. We were wondering if the chips melted, popped off or whatever. This one kinda bubbled/melted. It was pretty sweet.

Amazing what you can accomplish with a few lead shorts and absolutely no cooling.

I once removed a soundcard from my Pentium 75 machine while it ran.
The machine died right at the spot.. :-(
And we had some IBM deskstar drives die @ work but other than that I can't really recall any real hardware horrors.

It couldn't have been a PCI card. PCI slots are larger then AGP slots so his new card wouldn't have even fit in. Also, nearly all computers come with several PCI slots, so if the card didn't fit into the AGP slot zombie could have just put it into one of the other slots and it would have fit.

Plus I'm fairly sure they don't make any 6800 series cards that aren't either AGP or PCIe. Those are the only two options for cards in that series last time I checked.

Well i only have AGP slots. No PCI's whatso ever. And it was really wird when we found out it was a PCI card, because it fit so well into the slot. It just didnt get power or interface with the computer in any way shape or form... odd eh? Also the 6800 has the GT and GS verity, the GT being better and PCI and the GS being slightly less good and AGP.

Its a mystery...

Zoombie, this is more scary than the zombie stuff. Your PC will have some form of PCI in it, it could be PCI, PCI-X or PCIE.

As you can see you can see, one will not fit in the others slot.

It can't possibly be a PCI card. Since the 6800 would never be released for it. Which is logical, since the card can process more kb/sec then the slot can provide.

Well, id go on a rant on how much damage ive done to my PC (It's had two of everything, 3 of most things... hell if i hadnt kept haveing problems id almost have 3 PC's worth of stuff), but then all my stuff is purly bad luck.

Drilling through a mobo is shear stupidity. :P

And if you have a PC with no PCI at all... its very weird, if its over 2 years i doubt it has PCI express, and is prob AGP, else, its much more likly to be PCI express.
