Help! Tutorial too hard to follow!

Post by Chrispin »

I'm interested in making units. Trouble is, the tutorial on the TA Spring Wiki is too hard for me to understand correctly. They aren't telling me how to use most of the crap they tell me to download. It's like they expect me to already know how to use tools. Now I'm asking that one of you could maybe give me an easier tutorial on how to make units. I'm not new here, I'm just new to modding.

You make it sound like it's the modders job to make a tutorial for you.

I've had bad luck trying to make units so now I take precautions like getting help from an expert.

Well... um... how do I put this? I'll be frank. You won't like it.

Very simply, making a mod from scratch is hard.

Otherwise, everybody could do it.

Is this ideal? No.

Am I, and other people around here, like Zaphod, trying to make things easier? Yes.

Is it ever going to get to the point where somebody who has never built a model, learned how to skin, studied animation techniques and worked with sound going to build a brilliant TC mod in their first six months? No.

However, if you look at the work being done on the Heavy Gear mod, you can see a guy who obviously knows nothing about COB/BOS/TDF/FBI/S3O/ETC/ETC/ETC making his way through things, and doing a fine job.

OH MY GAWD!

GOOGLE IT TOTAL ANNIHILATION UNIT CREATION!

as far as the rest there are tons of threads on it, either Tauniverse or Planet-annihilation will have an answer. So get off of your kester and learn to think on your own! Mods are difficult and require a large amount of critical thinking. If you expect to make anything that is worth looking at then you had best learn to think on your own.

Hang on let me stop what I am doing because the world revolves around YOU

Gundam annihilation, all me. Guess what chrispin, I am an experienced programer even scripting can work weird because it is oddly implemented. It is alot of work. Have you even played my mod. 84 units. that is alot of work and frankly you need to put forth more of your own effort if you want help.

No, you simply do not know what you are doing, basic unit creation has little to do with luck. There are no script experts, zwzsg is pretty good but frankly you are going to have to spend some time learning things. Do not expect it to work from day one and if you have never programed before then you have a lot of work ahead of you.

Don't listen to most of these guys... They hold overblown opinions of themselves sometimes   /me pokes smoth and Argh

No, it's not hard making a few units here and there, which is what you seem to be trying to do. There are a lot of good threads on the http://www.tauniverse.com forums detailing how to make units, etc, and http://www.google.com is your friend. ;)

What most people like to see, before they help you, is that you have made a strong attempt to figure things out on your own; the way they figure it, if you cant Google something on your own and try and hash something basic together, then you're probably not worth their time ;)

Anyway, go on, look on tauniverse.com and try and put something uberbasic and hacky etc together- start by modifying a currently existing unit, like giving the Goliath the Can's laser ;) and then work from there to create your own creation :)

Yea, I just expected to make a few units that I had in mind. And if some of you didn't notice, a mod is basically just putting a bunch of units into one big pack... which I'm sure you knew  .... but I guess I should have searched myself before going on a forum to ask for help. And really, I don't care how long it takes to make a unit. I like doing projects  .
As long as it comes out to be a fairly good creation. And maybe once I start to make units I will post my progress on these forums. Eh... Whatever, at least Dragon's in a good mood today. Oh, and I have played Gundam Annihilation. Doesn't seem to have alot of units, but I'm sure you worked hard to make them.
