@SwiftSpear

Practice makes perfect. 'Sides which, we have a lot more coming, so think of it as a warmup ;)

@Andreask:

Thanks for the illuminating commentary. We modders appreciate putting hours of our time into our art so that we can read such amazingly gifted and elegant critique.

Ok, i will elaborate. Just because its you.

The archer is ugly because it looks like the result of a "How good can i model?"-Test, performed by a pupil of the art.

Many mods available to Spring feature elaborate models that are distinguishable from eachother and convey a certain theme and beauty while still remaiing functional to their purpose, and all that with using more thatn just basic geometry, that is especially true for the high-poly models.

From that point of view, the "Archer" and "NanoBlobs" as a whole seem like a big step back in mod-developement to me, as basic geomtrey makes me play with bricks and stones rather than designs pleasing to the eye of the player.

Furthermore, your texture detail is also quite low-level, if not plain ugly. If you choose to go the low-poly route, or even the extreme of it, basic geometry, you absolutely MUST elaborate on the texture detail, or your model will simply be plain

ugly.

So, basically, you just don't like it, and you didn't like the Spire Rook, either, and you don't like how NanoBlobs is about not looking like a "normal" or "good" RTS.

Mod-making is not a popularity contest for me- it's an opportunity to make something interesting, as opposed to the thousands of games I see every year that are either really dull... or lame... or both. I could be super-popular, right this minute, by making a realistic, modern combat sim that looked really nice, or a sci-fi game featuring guys in ultra-cool combat suits, stealing from a thousand other, boring games. Whoa... hmm... other people are already doing that. Should I just copy them? Nah. Do I care about people's opinions? Nah. I'm sure that Black and White turned a lot've people off, too ;)

I am skilled enough that I can build whatever I want- really! I chose this look for NanoBlobs intentionally, so I guess you're just not going to play it- and that's OK. Playing games should make you happy. Making this sort of game makes me happy. Which is, in the end, the main thing that counts. If you think NanoBlobs is weird now, wait for the final version- it's going to get better ;)

Wolfe Games' next project will be fairly conservative, artwise, so I'm enjoying some artistic freedom while I can. When NanoBlobs 0.3 is released, I'll be doing something much more conventional and boring, but I'm sure it will be more popular with people like you. So come back in about six months, and we can have this conversation again, k?

Oh its ugly as sin alright, but in a good old-cheesy-b-grade-sci-fi movie kind of way. :-)

That's pretty much the idea. Wait 'til you see the Bishop and the Lord, or hear the ZzzzWatt of the Spire Rook's Beam of Doom. The Knight is coming down the pike, too- still working on the thorny issue of animated, 3D treads, but it's coming and it will get done.

We're going to be consistantly campy, hopefully in a good way ;)

you know andreask....

shut the hell up.

ok, I feel better.

Argh, the texture on the archer does not have the same cheesy sci-fi feel as the rook. I was wondering if perhaps you would consider reworking his texture? perhaps with more metal surface and some light engraving on the sides... like:

either way, I am looking forward to the rest but I must say I think the archer would looke better on a round base... maybe something clock based?

Anyway. Love the rook and look forward to the rest.

Funny you should mention that... another unit will be featuring a very fun use of that very concept...

As for the Archer, just hold off until you see a herd of them in motion. They make a lot more sense at that point.

I'm just dying to get my hands on the final animation sequence, but now it's time for bed.

You made me feel a whole lot better. Thank you.

And now i am going to rub it in a little and be absolutely clear about telling you that i did neither talk to you, nor where you in any way affected by my critizism.
I also see no reason, why you would need to defend Argh in such an impolite way, as i was neither explicit nor vulgar or even aggressive.

I just expressed my opinion and you have neither the right nor the means to hinder me.

Thank you for your wasted time on this post and lets return to topic, as a flame-war would reduce this neat thread to a pool of superfluous testosteron.

Thank you.

Btw: I am really looking forward to Nano-Blob 0.3, as i stated on the first page of this thread, yet, i have a few objections, which i wrote down earlier.

I dont see any reason for aggression.

The Spire Rook looks like something out of a cel-shaded Alice in Wonderland.

I fucking love it.

I have to say I really like the modles for this game. it reminds me of an old game called ice breaker were you had to destroy these perimid type things. It is nice to see a more creative and care free aproach to rts modling instead of gritty unimaginative "real" tanks, troops and air planes (all that stuff that we can see in the real world).
Looking forward to see were this mod goes.
