Star Control 2: The Urquan Masters.
One of the best games, if not THE best game I've ever played, now ported from the 3do as freeware. I'd love to see a spring mod about this one.

I've been watching those too. The latest VPs, 3.6.8 delta I believe, are super duper. FS2_Open ftw.

Unless they fixed it by now, Nexuiz uses the networking code of Quake 1 which makes it hard to play in a LAN, and unplayable through the internet. Although it can show some very good grafics.

Of the same time, Alien Arena 2006:

Based on the engine of Quake 3, instead. With a quake 3 feeling, too. They seem to have a very professional organization.

Also, you have the great Wolfenstein Enemy Territory:

This one is absolutely professional. I'm still to understand how this game is free...

And Battle for Wesnoth is great fun :).

HAHAHA!

XBill

Squish the evil Bills before they infect your computers with the Windows virus.

An evil hacker known only as "Bill" has created a virus which resembles a popular operating system. This virus has the potential of turning even the most powerful computer into nothing more than a toaster. As a sysadmin, your job is to squish the evil Bill clones before they can infect your computers with the Wingdows virus. The latest version has more OS icons (including the Linux penguin), and LANs which can spread the virus to networked computers. This is incredibly cute; every anti-Microsoft Linux fan should see this.

An excellent shooter from Kenta Cho that you play with the mouse:Gunroar
There are other shooters on his site, but this one is my favorite. Source code in D language (a powerful mix of Java and C++) included in the zip file.

For the fans of Lode Runner and/or Mario type games, N is a fast-paced Flash game with minimalistic graphics but good gameplay and physics. Don't be affraid of the screenshots, give it a try, lots of people got hooked. Just look at the demo (which runs when you don't play), it will show you what the game is about. Very hard challenge, though.

A bit repetitive but with very polished (with an exceptional soundtrack) :
Rumblebox Tournament Edition (click on 'T├â┬®l├â┬®charger'). The goal is to punch as many opponents as possible. You can also grab them and perform combo attacks.

And of course, one of the best (if not THE best) racing games around :
Trackmania Nations ESWC, not open source, but completely free, and absolutely fun and addictive, especially online with the ladder and the nations ranking.
