ReRelease: Whakamutunga Riri and Resting Place

Post by Forboding Angel »

As some of you probably know, I have made nearly 200 maps for spring. Over time a lot of them have been lost. I lost a ton of maps when the change was made so that maps could not share archives. I also lost a lot of maps when FileUniverse went tits up. It's successor cost me some maps, and the there was the fiasco that was the death of Unknown Files where I had painstakingly curated all of my maps. After UF died, I couldn't be bothered to care anymore as I had spend tons of time and energy in keeping all of them well sorted and documented.

These maps were 2 that were lost. I just found the source files on a backup drive from 2006 which was when these maps were originally made. Here they are in their original form 9 years later... and goddamn if they still don't look frigging fantastic still.

Resting Place is the water version, Whakamutunga Riri is dry.

I actually spelled it wrong, sadly. I was doing it from memory, I'll update the name on SF. The map name is right.

Whakamutunga Riri is actually Maori and it means "Final Battle".

Cool. Kia ora! 10/10 for the name, and the name is important.

Thanks :-) It actually makes me really happy to have these maps in existence again. Whakamutunga Riri is iconic in it's own way for a lot of reasons. Not the least of which is that it was the most detailed sm3 map to ever be made (oh god it looked so sexy... ran like shit because of like 12 terrain layers, but god did it look amazing).

And then there is the fact that while they aren't my best work by far, they are my favorites. Smoth spent hours upon hours with me on this one giving me texturing advice.

I didn't ssmf these. I didn't edit them at all. This is exactly how they looked when they were released originally (except I changed water plane color so that the surrounds of the map wouldn't be stark white). :-)

So yeah, these are straight up SMF.

Hmm, never showed up on the maps list for spads or springie, now they do. Weird that they never showed up for me on a search either? I'm guessing that I searched for whakamatunga instead of whakamutunga. Regardless, at least they can be selected on the autohosts now.

Also, I cannot edit those as it looks like they are auto uploads (probably from the backup I made of unknown files on my server before it went down (it wasn't complete and the way uf stored files obsfucated the filenames so that it was impossible to tell what file was what without looking at a huge list of filename maps - Dick move by iamamug).

are there possible files which aren't at springfiles? if so, can you "give" me these files, i can (automaticly) give them correct names if they aren't broken. springfiles already renames files automaticly, so all are of the same schema

Nice ones! I actually had a 2010 download of Whakamutunga Riri still in my maps folder :-)

If you ever plan to touch them again: as great as it looks, the dry-broken ground in the river basin could maybe be replaced by a "wet ground" texture in the version with water. Just a suggestion.

Some of my old maps that I really really liked don't even exist anymore. Well not some... Most :-/

It's kind of depressing tbh, cause it's essentially years worth of work gone poof.

Is there any way to get all the maps on springfiles that have the description "Made by Forboding Angel" to be attributed to my username?

That is literally the description of every single one. I'm nothing if not consistent in my laziness. It's not like every map I have crapped out is a masterpiece, but it would be nice to have them just because I put a lot of work into them. I always made maps mainly for myself. Of course I wanted others to like them too, but they were my little masterpieces (Or crapsterpieces as the case may have been at times).

@qray, that actually surprises me. Apparently it wasn't as dead as I thought. I figured it was probably long gone and quite forgotten by now.

Thanks Abma!

Wow, only 80 of them :'( meaning that it's missing over 100. Meh, doesn't matter. I wish I had been more prudent about storing them.
