I have used macs, when I was doing digital art in college, the platform does not effect the quality of work. In some cases, macs have better hand holding stuff for the average user but at the higher levels of usage, the tools are the same. Add to that the fact that macs have been PCs with a different OS them for years now. I am not sure if you are joking or serious with that statement.
It still had no place in the thread and was rather rude. As far as "artists" go, anyone can call themself an artist and be legitimate. You might not be a good artist but you still can be an artist. When you are just saying "well you cannot do portraits," that is just moving the goal post as well. I knew people who could not draw well at all but did good sculpting and clay. There are various areas of technical skill. Say myself, I am what I would say is an above average "artist." I don't get bothered by the fact that I can find people so much more skilled than I am on the internet, there are what? 7 billion people on this planet? PFFFT hang on while I try and give as shit about the maybe 500k people on the planet who I will never be able to approach in skill.
I don't really see your point at all. Why because I am not a "pure" artist? Because I have other skills? Programing has always been an art for me, just a really technical one. I love seeing things move on screen. I like the shifting colors and the exciting display of units marching around. Anyone that games with me will tell you I constantly geek out and rage over bad and good art decisions in games. It is probably most of the reason I still game.
Is it "artsy" crap like flower or journey? Not always but I played the shit out of them. Sometimes I just like the way they used colors or whatever. I really don't think this has anything to do with your earlier statement though.
So again, I think that after the time I have been here making pretty worlds and units move around, I can call myself an artist. I used to deny that i had that side to me but now I believe I can say I earned it.
As far as criticism, at taking it? No that is bullshit, artist are not punching bags. May of them have breakdowns and get stressed over criticism, if anything most of the fine art people I know are way more emotionally tuned in than I am. I think that entire statement is based on an ignorant generalization.
It doesn't really matter because you are not interested in having any sort of productive conversation. I think you are just looking to pick an internet fight for some reason.

@Jools:
no word about a mac:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artist
imo a professional artist is a person who earns money by selling stuff which, by his definition is art.

everything I have done in spring can fall under: ars gratia artis

That's nice, from metro goldwyn meyer I think.
Do you really think I meant the thing about Mac OS literally? I meant it in a greater context. It's like when I say that "blessed art the cheese-makers", then cheese-makers really refer to makers of any dairy products.
Still, most visual artists and also journalists do use macs. Not like it's a rule or anything, it's like you could also say that most lawyers wear glasses. It's a jab at vocational stereotypes.Usually people find those funny, at least if you're in the group being stereotyped.

NONE of the lawyers I have been to wear glasses though.
I use the Latin version over the french version because I don't like the french language. It came from the bohemian creed.
