You can start with 3dsm just as good.
True that wings is easyer to learn, but still. I've started with 3dsm as well.
The tutorials comming along with the 3dsm are great.
The solid foundation is right there.
Help>Tutorials, and off you go. Start with the top. The Still Life tutorial.
Afther that one, the texture a low-poli spaceship from the gamedesign tut is very usefull, it handles UV mapping.
http://www.3dcafe.com/ (and then free stuff) is a nice plce for specivic things. (like lazers, smoke etc).
Ofcourse your local libary probably have some books of 3dsm (Maybe wings as well), All of them are doing the same job as the official tutorial.
