No, these ideas aren't so great, so I posted what I want in a tournament instead.

No, but I don't believe in constructive criticism so I won't tell you how to make anything better.

Spring Tournament

Post by Nemo »

Alright, since the other attempt at a tournament was pathetic, and run by a shady guy who never played, and who had a nasty site, I figured I'd try to set up a better one. I'm thinking a 1v1, non-clan tournament to start off.

I have a few thoughts, but I haven't started getting the structure together yet.

1) a list of designated host machines. I'd like to pull together a list of people with similar system specs and connections who are willing to host matches as a spectator. With luck, these people would be from various timezones, and could provide hosting most times of the day. They would observe each match, and I would host the replay.

The advantages of this are several: server conditions should be roughly the same from match to match, and are equal for both players. No more lagdeaths when your squad of AKs wanders off while you're in the land of lost pings, and the host ping advantage is more or less gone. Granted, this isn't as much an issue for an RTS like Spring, but it DOES make a difference, especially with crucial attack timing or dgunning. It would suck to be knocked out of a tourney because you lag-spiked and the other guy didn't.

2) Flexible match scheduling. My general thought is that once a challenge is issued, the two players have a week to get the match in. This should be enough time for players to find a good time for the host and the two competitors.

3) Hosted replays of games, from the spectator. If there are any issues with dishonesty/cheating/whatever, the game that the hosting spectator saw will be available for anyone who wants to download it.

I plan on hosting all of this on my clan's site, teamgen.com. Nothing is prepared as of yet, but it would probably be focused on the teamgen wiki (for challenges, results, links to replays, scheduling, standings), and its forums.

As for what mod to play - if there is enough response to this post, I was thinking of simply running one XTA tourney and one AA tourney. This month would be XTA, the next would be AA. Or something like that. I'm open to suggestions. I'll ask around for a list of maps to play, but I have a few ideas already.

Edit: As for credentials, this would be the first tournament I've run, but I was the leader of Erinyes, the top squad in an obscure game called Wulfram II for about a year. I figure that counts for something, organization wise. Anyways, I'll post format and other details once I have a system in place for people to start signing up.

non-clan?
u mean no 'teams' or that ppl in clans can't play? :s
tbh i SERIOUSLY doubt this is going to happen, but you never know. i think that the odds of this going down soon are equal to the chances of the 1.03 patch for BFME coming out in a wekk

by non clan, I meant that you wouldn't play as a team. No 2v2s or stuff like that. You could wear your tag, sure, but you'd play against clan members just like any other players.

Spring doesn't have enough clans/people in clans to support a full clan tournament yet, I think. If I'm wrong about this, then please correct me, but I think that any current clan match would be dominated by one or two teams, which is little fun for anyone.

Thank you for your doubts. Why don't you think this is possible? The other suggested tournament was far less thought through, run by someone who didn't play Spring, with a pop-up infested site, and he got plenty of interested responses.

Sounds interesting. If you manage to find all these admins to host the games, I guess it could work.

I'm in atleast :)

Hopefully we could have a nice tourney site some day if tourneys become popular.. Something like clanbase has...

Why is there no option "I'm too lazy to read the post but I like the sound of the title" in the poll?

Signups will last until Febuary 15th, and then the first matches will be scheduled for the following week (The week of Monday the 20th to Sunday the 26th). The idea with the scheduling is that once you have a team to fight, you have a week to find a time to play that match. So, once matchups are created, teams can find any time and day between the 20th and the 26th to get the game in.

I'm still looking for more folks who would just like to watch the tourney as a dedicated host machine. If you think you're not good enough to play, or can't find a teammate, but you have a good connection and computer, why not sign up as a host machine so you can watch the matches as they unfold?

Contact me through email or msn at nemo_nobody@walla.com, or go to http://www.arena52gaming.com and make a thread in the open forum if you have any questions (although you might be ambushed by our forum bot, Gilligan. Its okay, he's harmless. Really.)

Get in there, sign up today!

Hey Nemo, and all the others aound here, i have some nice infrastructure to supply.

I am the Admin of the brand new SupCom/Spring section on http://www.gamereplays.org.
Gamereplays is a great Network of Sites dedicated to great RTS games...

Our TASpring Forums arent that well visited yet (not even 2 weeks old), but due to the other Games we support (like C&C ZH, Empire at War, bfme) we have alot experience with this kind of stuff.

We thought about getting a Spring Tournament organized ourselves, like we frequently do it with C&C and bfme.

We have a pro tournament Site included in gamereplays, that allows very easy and effective organization of Tournaments here the link:
http://www.gamereplays.org/tourny/
and here as an example of the results of last weeks C&C Generals Tournament:
http://www.gamereplays.org/tourny/disp_ ... .php?id=61

As you already saw in the name, gamereplays deals with the replay aspect of rts games alot. So in our Forums everyone can post good replays and staff members so called replay reviewers watch it and point out the good and bad sides of it. Extrordinary replays get promoted to "Elite" or "Legendary", and the most entertaining one will be shown as "replay of the week"

Our first and only Replay Reviewer so far is MIN3MAT, many of you should know him already

So we not only have the right Tournament Site, we also have the right Forums to post all the tournament replays.
heres a link to our TA Spring Forums. They dont have much traffic yet because they´re brand new and dont have a portal yet
http://www.gamereplays.org/community/-TA2-Section.html

So:
let me offer you to use the Forums and the Tournament Site for organzing Spring Tournaments

Nemo, herewith i offer you an admin account at the tournament site. Not with unlimited admin powers at start of course, but enough to set up, hold and manage Tournaments.
On top of that all participants can post their Replays in our Replay Forums, where everyone can review them. We could even make it a rule to post every game played.
People can then join the Tournament by signing in at the Tournament Site, and can discuss, communicate and review games on the Forums.

If its a Tournament that goes over several days, and everyone has to post the replays, people can even study the replays of their future opponents, and strategize....So if someone has a good rush, it will work the first Round but the second he´ll need something new

We´ve set up set Strategy Forums as well....

All just waiting to be used :)

not to mention we have 20.000 rts gamers registered on gamereplays, so there are many potential new Spring players to mobilize

Tell me what you think guys.... especially nemo

Wow...that's amazing. However, I think I'd like to complete this first tournament before trying to shift over to gamereplays.org. I already have everything needed in place, and so I'll get through this tourney before trying to use the excellent facilities at gamereplays.org.

Thanks for the offer, project, I'd absolutely like to take you up on that once this event is finished.

In other news, gogogo sign up. You have 8 days. We wouldn't want this to be a WarC stomp, now would we? <_<

Stick it to them with their fancy tags, and get your teams on the list!

If the player can't agree on a map, how is it chosen? Is it random from a pool? If so what is the pool? Or is it just assigned?

Someone, preferably a person who reviews maps, should produce a list of approved maps for tournament-style play, meaning that they are officially recognized as balanced/fair maps, and specifying how they are fairly played (i.e. East v West, North v South, 4 corners, other set ups, and combinations).

The maps will be standard for each tier of the tourney. Assuming more than two teams are entered.

The first tier will be The Cold Place (using first and third start positions). Second will likely be one of Forboding Angel's River maps. I will post further maps as the tourney progresses.

Of course, the finals will be on Small Divide.

Edit: to be more clear, yes, the maps will be assigned. All matches in the first round will be played on The Cold Place.

In Addition to Comet Catcher Remake, I nominate Monolith nAAR, Fizzy Lakes (if River Dale is considered 'balanced', this map sure as hell ought to be), SnowScape, Altored Divide, Ashap Plateau, GoW II Remake, Green River, Hells Pass, Lava Rivers, and Painted Desert Remake as fair maps for tournament play.

I personally don't think many of these represents fair and balanced maps. CCR would be a good map for a tourney.

Monolith, don't think I need to explain why.

Fizzy lakes... Metal everywhere and is a rush for the center.
Riverdale... Badly balanced metal, rush for the center.
Altored Divide... Promotes porcing, rush for the center.
Ashap... I think would work well for a tourney.
GOW II... Horrible. It's a water map and there is no metal in the water. Just plain horrible design.
Hells Pass... Porc map.
Painted desert... Metal map is rather bad. The highest point on this map is 10 meters. Horrible.

You don't have to listen to me. Everyone has a different view and TBH I don't really care what maps are used, however badly designed maps are gonna do nothing but cause problems. Rush for the center maps will definately be horrible or tourneys.
