I concur with Dragon on FileUniverse being the weak link at the moment. I don't know what the problem is (though I assume bandwidth), but I get EXTREMELY slow map downloads from FU, and I assume others do to. One time last week, during a period of 30 seconds, I received 800 bytes of map data. Yes. 800 bytes. I haven't measured data in bytes since back when I had a 386 25MHz with a HUGE 20MB hard drive and 512KB of RAM running MS-DOS 6, and occupied my time by playing (and programming) various QBasic games.
Perhaps the good management at FileUniverse could look into getting advertising and migrating to a better connection and better servers? This would fix a lot of our problems.
A Spring manual and walkthrough would help the nubbies a lot as well. As it is, whenever I play with a newbie, I have to explain how to play the game while trying to play. Maybe I'll work on that through the wiki when I get the time.

I say:SinbadEV wrote:I keep wondering when we're gonna get big enough to get Wanged (penny-arcade front page mention)... When do you think we should start a comunity wide like "tell everyone you know, put up posters, post on all forums" promotion...
1st - Wait for the Linux port
2nd - Wait for a new front page
3rd - Do not wait for the new GUI???
2nd - It won't make that huge of a diference but i say wait for it because it will make a diference and it is pretty much doable. We can expect with a high degree of certainty that it can be done moderatly fast and to good effect.
3rd - Considering that the new GUI project is kind of cursed, that i may be buggy at start and that the current one is highly tested and stable(?) i say do not wait for it.
Unles jouninkomiko, or someone else, asures that there are high probabilities that it will be ready within x days/weeks and, then, we decide if wait or not.

The Star wars manual is quite well done. It could be a good model for an XTA manual.Felix the Cat wrote:A Spring manual and walkthrough would help the nubbies a lot as well. Nothing, and i reapeat it , nothing, will be highly tested and stable in the linux port. The current stableness doesnt have anything to do with how the linux codebase will deliver, so that would be just the right time to include the new gui (as else there will be two different periods of "shit its buggy")PauloMorfeo wrote: 3rd - Considering that the new GUI project is kind of cursed, that i may be buggy at start and that the current one is highly tested and stable(?) i say do not wait for it.

Manual? You mean like this?
I admit it needs a bit of work to be called a manual, but between that and the strategy guide it's a good start... I'm not sure a unit by unit desription like in the SWTA page is nessasary but it would be nice.
also, try http://www.ta-spring.com/maps is a mirror for the maps, maybe R1CH would allow the mirror links to be placed in FU so that people have the option.
also, the map pack torrents don't seem to be easily available, maybe any FU pages for maps that are included should have a "this map is included in the map pack torrent" link

Also things at fileunvierse are being lost in limbo.
NTAI 0.29d has the most hits of any of the skirmish AI's and will soon surpass the spawn files that everyone so hastily rushed tog et, yet it's stuck in the public folder, and hasnt been moved. I'm tired of seeing NTAI 0.28.10 as top of the skirmish AI dll list above AAI always 20 hits behind, that and a growing nubmer of maps are dissapearing into the public folder too.
