All white map

I used to play spring a lot, i came back after a while, installed and something didn't work as expected.

I use:
openSUSE 12.3
NVIDIA GeForce GT120M
using Nouveau driver
2 screens, windowed mode
The issue:
The map ingame was all white (as seen in the FAQ).
The proposed solution(libgl1 + driconf) didn't work;
I did install Mesa-libGL1
then I couldn't find driconf:
broken link on driconf website
not available for OpenSUSE in http://www.opensuse.org
I installed driconf for "SUSE SLE-11 SP 2" from opensuse.org
then i type driconf in the bash terminal and it says

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/driconf", line 26, in <module>
import driconf
ImportError: No module named driconf

Also installed http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/ ... 4.rpm.html
it didnt help(driconf won't start)

Try /advmapshading 0 ingame, and disable texture compression in springsettings.

No, that would be black map.
He must install driconf & enable DXT/S3TC texture compression.

i installed the nvidia graphics driver
now the map looks fine
(sadly along the process i broke the x server, now i can only log on as root else i cant see the desktop)

you need to add your user to the `video` group

thanks, can you help with this:
(logged in as root)
usermod -a -G video janos
(janos is my user i want to add)
gives "configuration error - unknown item 'LASTLOG_ENAB' (notify administrator)"
