Does anyone use the IdleBuildersNEW widget?

Post by Silentwings »

You'd know if you do use it - when you have idle constructors it displays large icons at the bottom of your screen.

Imo this widget is ugly (the icons are not build icons), disabled by default, not that useful anymore (imo its superceded by immobile builders and smartnanos) and far as I know hardly anyone uses it now. But now is your chance to say if so you think different :p

Evo does, although not by default. I personally don't care for it.

And what are these? They're not on my widget list at all.

At some point I used some idle builder widget (I never selected stuff with it it was just a reminder to press ctrl-b), but don't remember which one. Right now I haven't bothered to tweak any widgets though beyond disabling the most obnoxious ones, so it's not on. Maybe I'll get around to using one again, but what version of it would be best, no idea.

Sorry, typo, I meant "immobile builders" which will be on your widget list when you run BA (not "idle builders").

Since it seems there is very little call for it, this widget will no longer be kept as part of BA.

For anyone who wishes to continue to use this widget, you can download the version from BA 7.75 below and put it into you /Spring/Luaui/Widgets directory.

That widget has nothing to do with IdleBuilders, one of them is about immobile builders and the other is about mobile builders. I thought you talked about another widget that does the same job.

Don't remove it.

The connection to immobilebuliders and smartnanos is that they are both things that help you in some way when your builders are idle - before immobilebuilders existed, idlebuildersNEW would have told you when you had idle nanos. You are wrong to say idlebuilersNEW is about mobile builders, it treats all builders equally.

Sorry, even with your vote counted (from someone who admits they don't use it...?) there seems barely any call for it.

If you want to start using it again I've gone to the trouble of providing you with an easy way.

What? You put up a thread asking does anyone use a widget, then proceed to say you'll remove it when you only get votes to the contrary? And I left it on now myself now that you reminded me.

If anything I'd enable it by default, most people would need it badly.

And it is about mobile builders in practice, when indeed nanos will just be patrolling almost always. It does show if you've left some idle, though.

Not that I play anymore, but I used this widget and as far as I know, there is no suitable replacement.

Does anyone use the IdleBuildersNEW widget?
Reading posts on this forum is probably my least significant way of gauging opinions (most active players are not members here, this is really the dev community & nearly all the people I chat about BA too just do it in lobby) but its not ignored.

If you read the posts above my 'its gone' post, one is my "I don't use it" one says "I have it in but turned off the mod I make and I don't use it", your post saying "I don't use it but I used too. Maybe I'll get around to using it again." and one "I use it". Amongst the (larger) number of responses I got in the lobby, no one used it.

I can't say I interpreted this as a pleathora of votes to keep, although as I said, I've noted that you posthumously changed your response.

Sure, maybe it's not used much by people anymore if they don't know about it. But is that really the important thing? It's still one of the most helpful widgets for a newbie to have, as I said it should be default on.

I personalty don't like it since you can see all your cons by zooming out (i use /disticon 85) , they are the not-moving-cross and I think that give you far more info since you see all at once and where they are. In addition that is polluting the screen which is already full of info (resources, ally resources, factories, nuke, tactical nuke, unit selection when they are selected, build list, etc....)

For noob focus on micro that might be nice though...

I dont imply in anyway johan is a noob :p

Yep but without this you won't know exactly when to press that.

Always. Almost every player will greatly improve in BA if he does this constantly. I'm not kidding.

Another 2 cents... If it were modified to show the buildpic instead of whatever the heck it dies now is supposed to be, I think it's usefulness would increase exponentially.

I know that my opinion of it would at least. I tried to add this functionality myself, but my lua foo is grasshoppa.

I dont use it, prefer ctrl+b (and "keeping cons busy" by ending build queus with vaguely aimed fight command)

But such widget is not aimed at longtime players, so of course in forum nobody has need for it.
But new players will not know ctrl+b (or forget it again) so needs a clickable thing with same function. (and a tooltip to read the hotkey!)
Finding idle builder is a function players expect in RTS I think.

Yes, I completely agree - BA has a tonne of useful keys and currently only a poor way (http://springrts.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=30173) of communicating them to players.

I think that I won't do anything further for BA but I do have a nice (but not yet discussed with other devs or implemented!) idea for how to do it within the ba:r gui.
