Final Frontier 1.081 "F" Variant

Post by FizWizz »

I had played a game of Final Frontier and for a while I was struck by how close together my and my opponent's fleet and fighters got to each other to trade fire with each other, and it seemed somewhat awkward to me. I decided to make an experimental variant mod of Final Frontier to explore the possibility of making fighting take place over distances more fitting to the scale of the warships in Final Frontier, so here's a simple little mod meant to give weapons a range boost.
Changes include:
-Global doubling of sight ranges
-Global doubling of radar ranges
-Global doubling of weapon ranges
-Global doubling of flight altitudes
This mod is simply an experiment on FF. I do not know for certain how these changes will pan out, and to be honest, I have not playtested it yet as of this post. I realize that this mod will in all certainty eliminate all smaller maps from feasible game-play. Anyways, I don't have any expectations for this mod, but I hope someone enjoys it.

Because of the short down-time between FF 1.08 and 1.081, I've released a 1.081 compatible F variant as well.

this idea is actual not new to us, but atm there arent any big maps to have a good effect from that. I like bigger ranges too, but when u increase all ranges by 100% you will not be able to have a playable match on a small or medium 14x14 map. Even on 20x20 it seems for me a bit to high. About the flight altitude. I tried that out too, but i thought it is only good for fighters and bombers, cause the firgates and big ships look silly when they aim a target that is in the near of them They flip the noise of the ship straight to earth o.O
Perhaps with better/bigger maps some ranges can be increased in FF in a later version, but sure not 100% ;) and radar seems fine for me. There is a lvl 2 sensorarray with a range of 5500. Thats not bad i think

Well sensor ranges seem fine. I've had problems with bigger ships flying too low, perhaps if people trying to build maps for FF could remember to keep them fairly flat and low so that battlecruisers don't get stuck on terrain- boy does that look sily.

(This is responding to a request in the Final Frontier thread)

Huh, I wasn't aware that anyone actually used the F variant that I made. Well, I could remake the F variant again, but while it is still up in there air, what changes would anyone like to see? I'm not going to consider doing anything radical or involving, but would anyone like to see something aside from a 50% (100% is a bit steep) increase in weapon/radar/LoS range and cruisealt ?

[edit]I've pondered doubling (or x1.5'ing) the Rate of Fire on the Commander's Fusion gun to make it potent until the late game, and reducing the accuracy on the Core basic anti-fighter laser to put it more on-par with the Arm anti-fighter pulse cannon. Any thoughts on this?[/edit]

I personally think a cool way to make the commanding unit strong for the endgame again would be some nifty feature that needs a LOT of energy to use... energy you dont have until you got orbitals or fusions up.

Like for example an energy shield, or a high energy weapon (like those cool red lasers of doom core now has).

Adding new features to this mod is a bit beyond the scope of the experimentation I would like to undertake. Besides, doesn't the Fusion gun take ~1000 E to fire, or am I mistaken? increasing the firing rate will increase the energy consumption.
