hosting a server on my computer

Post by jersey22 »

my friend and I were playing a total annihilation mod for spring and with just 500 units each we experienced lots of lag, so I was wondering what do I do to host a spring server for that mod on my pc? is this possible?

thank you in advance

Yes it is. See the first post in this thread for instructions:

Not sure if hosting an autohost will decrease the lag. Lag can be either caused by CPU/GPU or because of the network. I think with many units the lag could be CPU-related.

I know Total Annihilation works with up to 5000 units, but I think it uses the cpu less because it's not really 3D. Or it is 3D but with locked camera mode.

TA rendering was entirely software based. You could have 8 GTX Titans in sli and it wouldn't do you a bit of good.

@jersey, I assume you mean you were playing BA. Well depending on your computer setup, 1000 units is a lot to handle. Couple that with the fact that BA isn't exactly what you would call "optimized".

Also, TA would choke like a dog on a bone with 5k units, even with a modern machine.

Just because it was technically possible to have that many units doesn't mean it's feasible.

Most people are able to handle ~2000 units in BA games without it being a problem. But half of these would normally be stationary in a big game.

If you want help with performance issues then you'd better give us details on your computer(s) and pastebin the file infolog.txt (from your /spring folder).

Your lag is probably caused by your computer not being fast enough/having gfx drivers issues/etc and not by the limiting speed of your network connection - I doubt hosting a local server would make a difference for you. You can check your cpu usage % by typing "/info" while ingame.

To tack onto what wings said... Often it isn't the graphics card that is the "bottleneck". The majority of the time it is CPU related (this is of course assuming that you have a fairly modern graphics card).
