Re: X-COM
It sux? I was thinking about getting it.
Why is it bad?
I thought XCOM was always considered a worse version of Jagged alliance?
By the way, what games do you like Rattle?

Re: X-COM
I don't think the issues I have with it change in the full game
The good:
Sound, graphics! Looks brilliant, runs smooth on a 5 year old system.
General visual style
The bad:
The game restricts your freedom by a large deal.
Can't build your own base, at least in the beginning
Get line-fed silly missions instead of chasing UFOs like in the original
Can't shoot buildings to tiny bits
Your soldiers are tied to silly classes and have no inventory
Feels very very very consolish, like most games do nowadays

Re: X-COM
thank you for confirming my suspicion of the rape and dismemberment of a once beloved franchise
so pretty much most of the cool things about the original games have been removed... one of the appeals IMO of the original was how difficult and complicated it wasThe bad:

cant sell difficult stuff to console tards.. but look on the positive side, you also dont have to sell good stuff to the console tards. Just give them a sandbox and some ways to get mayhem out there system, and they ll be happy ever after. If you challenge the challenged with more then fucking the bulletholes in chesthighwalls, you are discriminating against a large part of todays audience.
Re: X-COM
I looked at a few reviews that mention the demo and early games, sound like the lame early missions and limited freedom you describe is the game easing people into the game and it opens up later... also I saw an entire review that seemed to be solely about how awesome the base building/managing system was so I'm guessing that was a demo issue too.rattle wrote:I don't think the issues I have with it change in the full game

Re: X-COM
I was suspecting that but... what about laser sniping buildings to tiny bits and pieces????? What about throwing time bombs into the roofs of crash-landed UFOs???? Why u no time bombs? ;) I dont think so, game
I think it's for the best to watch extensive footage on the tubes before wasting 46 eurodollars

Re: X-COM
It reviews extremely well for a PC game... but then, at some level PC gamers have a huge case of abused Dog syndrom, where if someone gives you a biscuit we'll happily take a few slaps to the chops, as long as it's not too particularly cruel.
To me: it looks fun, but it's a bastardization of what X-Com is supposed to be.

Re: X-COM
On squad sizes: I've heard many argue this is a positive thing. In my opinion it's sacrificing strategy for tactical game play and pacing. At very least it removes the boring phenomena of cycling through 12 units turns when most of them have nothing better to do than stand around.Johannes wrote:Apparently the whole game isn't as linearly scripted as the demo missions, looks like they botched the demo by all accounts.
But it's got much much smaller squad sizes than the original...

Re: X-COM
Seems games these days take themselves much more seriously than before....
In a mainstream title you usually don't see any quirky cool "unpolished" stuff that would make you feel like you are improvising and gaming the game...
All you can do in games these days must be under complete control of the devs....
