Escapist Expo videos

Post by Azhukar »

Some of the best game industry related talks I've watched to date.

Each video is around an hour long, so far watched 6. It's glorious. Several intellectual people from the escapist magazine answer and debate various questions and issues.

Some panels from the expo in no particular order:
Q&A 1
Q&A 2
My Favorite Game
Fanboyism
The Hour of Love

I agree. I watch a fair bit of TB, but when he starts talking about puzzle games or FPS movement mechanics I want to punch the screen.

Game reviewers in general tend to think they are much more intelligent than they are, and often try to apply overly simplistic "solutions" to problems to the point where if you have any idea of what is actually going on, they're incredibly frustrating to listen to.

Watched first two.
I'm not impressed.
These guys are suppose to be edgy and experts at games but none of them even tried Dwarf fortress(someone in the audience asks about it)...
Ok, its not some super blockbuster, its for hardcore patient players who can take the beating till they learn it but these guys should know it or tried it at least.
It is extremely original in its complexity.
Also too many jokes and not enough in depth analyzsis of different games and genres...
I dont know..
I guess the escapist was never a source of that, which kinda makes all their talks just a circlejerk of jokes and casual talk about popular games.
"ohh CoD suck boohoo"...
I can read way more interesting conversations about games in 4chan/vg or some reddit subreddits.

when it comes to films youd expect critics and experts to know about edgy stuff and movies that push the boundries or are not for the casual viewer but these game critics seem to only touch the surface..
Yay , steam indie games...Blah boring.

Have not heard a single opinion that was not more or less mainstream or that has already been expressed multiple times.

Where are the real intelligent in depth mentions of complex games like DF like grand strategy games.
Fuck that they are inaccesible they more than make up for it by being extremly complex and rewarding for those that have a bit of patience.

It's not only game reviewers in those talks. Some videos have a psychiatrist, sound artist or a comic book artist.

There's a whole video about reviewing games though, they explain a lot about how it's not reasonable to review every single game by one person. Some games require different people.

Why even desire a review of something to align with your views? You already know your view of it. If it's a game you haven't played yet, then you should play it if you want to see a review aligned to your own views.

I watch reviews because I want to know what conclusions others have come to.

Here's a recording from their psychologist on games and mental health.

Audio only but well worth the time.

Because it's very rare to see amazingly intelligent and original opinions about game from any of the reviewers I encountered.
I want to see popular reviewers have similar opinions to mine cause i want to see games that focus on stuff I enjoy.
If reviewers judge games by certain standards that are IMO shallow(and many gamers read these reviews to see if a game is worth playing or buying) game devs will be less motivated to make games that focus on other things that are not what these popular game reviewers treasure.

The only thing i enjoyed and found the interesting is when the Zro Punctuation guy started talking about what in his opinion made silent hill 2 the best horror game.
There he touched some interesting points.

I watched a few of them. I'll agree with gota in that they aren't groundbreakingly full of amazing unheard of wisdom's that all game developers should immediately take heed of; but I kind of think it's unrealistic to expect that.

I appreciated the sense of humor, although there were times it was crass, and I liked how they got deeper into the topics presented than the videos/articles posted on the website generally do.

I'm not sure if I'm interested in the Q&A enough to bother with those ones, but I liked the ones I watched.
