Re: Project eternity
I believe they may have just broken the "fastest to a million" record... they have 2 $10,000 backers and hundreds backing over $500... clearly you are not alone.

forever alone background, bicycle glove tanlines on hands...
Anyway, why isn't Peter Molyneux on this kickstarter stuff? this is right up his alley!

Re: Project eternity
cause there he is just one among many, and lets face it, he wants his stage alone. If bullfrog was the beatles, molyneux is the georg Harrison off the industry. Capable, but no teamplayer, and not capable without a team.
Also he wouldnt keep his stretch goals.
I want Story, Settings information. Anybody can claim he has writers able to produce torment stuff, but to commit to it (aka, cutting off all of the teen audience, that is were its showin)

Re: Project eternity
I am saying most of these kickstarters are a bunch hype-driven name dropping, feature promising bullshit. The exact sort of thing which brought us both fable titles
Re: Project eternity
I wonder what cult classic will be next on the kickstarter mill.
I would pay cash money for an albion remake.
I loved that world to pieces.

Re: Project eternity
I want a mega roguelike kickstarter.
Randomized Dungeons and overworld.
Intricate randomized quest system.
Warring factions and a living dynamic world.
Shit ton of content.
Different control mehcanisms allowing you to be a classical single warrior or a social leader.
A mayor.
A merchant with a vast trading system.
A lord or king fighting for control over the world, able to call armies to battle...
Just imagine what a million dollars roguelike can achieve in terms of gameplay.

Or a proper Mordor remake!

Didn't you just describe Dwarf fortress adventure mode?Rumpelstiltskin wrote:I want a mega roguelike kickstarter.

Re: Project eternity
Last time I checked, DF was just getting mostly superficial updates, that don't really affect how one plays the game. And the biggest problem of the game, UI, is still untouched for ages (unless I'm behind times). I'm not too confident DF team would have what it takes to make an excellent game, even if tons of money was thrown in.
And I don't really see the point of a game like Basic described, at least the part about being able to be a merchant or king or adventurer all in one game - much better to just focus on doing one thing in a good manner than trying to have many totally different gamemodes in one game.

Re: Project eternity
DF is as good as you can get all alone, and lets accept it.. some people are just naturally not team players..

Re: Project eternity
No no.
With one million dollars for a fucking roguelike you should be able to deliver a nethack level of content for the classic rogue-like experience and than also wrap it up with a complex simulation of a dynamic world and social control and multi unit command mechanics.
Also throw in some simulation of materials and material destruction and all that goodness.
weather system and minning of resources and cutting down trees..
Characters and creatures need certain resources to sustain life and try to get them etc...
towns and cities spawn as more population is gathered in close proximity and towns and cities get abandoned or destroyed by enemies.
no more dumb mobs, standing waiting to be killed.
they have their own goals, some move in packs, hunt, search for water or whatever other nutrition they require.
Faction fight for dominance and characters and groups have opinions of other individuals and other groups etc...
A deep world with complex simulation that allows for emergent gameplay and provides a deep yet unique experience in a sandbox dynamic world every time you play.

Re: Project eternity
well, certainly EA can be reasoned with, to get BioWare to produce such nichee-market titles.
Re: Project eternity
what is wrong with nethack yan? I seem to recall that was a popular rogue.
Re: Project eternity
In an interview, Chris Avellone said he'd do a game in spirit Planescape: Torment for players of Planescape: Torment if a kickstarter project made over 1000 euros.
Avellone is certainly an extremely talented designer and most of the games he has worked on have turned out pretty fantastic story-wise. NWN2 finally brought a passable story which NWN1 lacked - but NWN2 was unplayable otherwise so.. Fallout: New Vegas was a lot better than Fallout 3 and so forth.
Planescape: Torment is by far my favorite game (listing top 10 would be impossible, but Torment grabs the first!
). But what Avellone and the other writers, artists and designers did for it, was only a part of the whole. Planescape is a very good setting and David Cook close to a genius in literature and fantasy. Avellone is not David Cook and I doubt very much they'd have the writing staff who were capable to pull off a wholly new setting as interesting as Planescape is.
My guess is that it's just going to be yet another standard RPG for the standard people, as dumped down as Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fable... PS:T is a cult classic for a reason, it didn't try to appeal to everyone and knew it well.
Oh, and the "intense combat" of Icewind Dale 1 and 2 was just a bore and tedious, not exciting and thrilling.
That game was such a horrible letdown it isn't even funny. Though I was expecting really bad when I picked it up, knowing full well in advance that all the aging and marriage and whatnot is just going to be clumsily scripted in, somehow it even still managed to piss me off with it's poorness.
EDIT: Oh god, I just went on to check the reception of Fable 1. "Fable should satisfy you with its incredible depth, open-ended game play, and a solid story that gets even better about half-way through the adventure." ....... ....... *facepalms* .....

Re: Project eternity
IMO, All modern RPG games should have a dynamic changing world with as much randomization as possible.
Inside that you can design a deep story as well.

Why?Rumpelstiltskin wrote:IMO, All modern RPG games should have a dynamic changing world with as much randomization as possible.

I personally don't think there necessarily needs to be more than a good story offered by a RPG - like for a good book.
Dynamic world and randomization can be a major distraction as well.
Re: Project eternity
we all luvinly remember the randummization in oblivian and nwn.. can i have more blockiness and repeating tiles in soup please.. Anytime, says the randomchef, and pours me another bowl of the same every days pott.
