In the states you have to go to a higher end store to find anything other than cheddar, mozzarella, goat cheese and parmesan.Das Bruce wrote:How can you not have heard of camembert(cammom-bear)? The only less exotic cheese is cheddar.

Everywhere is. You cannot go from one country to the next then expect food, culture or clothes to be the same. Trust me, I can only find the creole cuisine I like here, in Louisiana largely due to food availability and the fact that because it is part of the local culture that people make it.
It isn't about what is the best, it is about what is available. have you ever used Recado ? In Belize they do a WONDERFUL chicken with it. I have eaten tons of pastries, france has amazing ones.
EVERYWHERE I GO I tried to bring foods back with me, learning about how food was cooked and eventually realizing that the local foods are not that because they are the best but because that is what is available there.
It is why mcdonalds SUCKS. They are the same with minor variants, they taste the same sort of bland garbage.

It's a mission to get good cheddar in any European country other than the UK.
Re: Cheese question.
Excimer laser is known for its excellent cheese cutting ability. If you don't have one at hand, try to cut the Camembert lengthwise, i.e. along the general direction of the disgusting fungus that grows on the sides.

Re: Cheese question.
Cheddar is a different product, people like it, I don't, that doesn't mean it is not a good cheese for some.

I've never heard of camembert before this thread. Maybe its because I'm from USA?
I don't think I'd be able to gather the courage to eat it if it in any way resembles brie though... I had a friend make some brie with butter and brown sugar at a party one time; it smelled like ejaculate, completely scarring me for life.

for an american...
Camembert is like butter with a "regular cheese" shell(AKA Rind). The white part IS edible and should be eaten.
All cheese making is "gross" this is just part of the process. Don't go learn about beer making if you don't like the idea of cheese. Your friend was probably NOT following standard methods of cheese making. I have no clue what he was making but this is something I would not try from home and I have friends who make their own beer.

Every supermarket, and even Walmarts and Targets, have a section with fancy cheese. Usually next to the bakery area. It just sounds like some people never bothered to browse it.
Re: Cheese question.
play your cheese some linkin park it'll do the trick
so I usually put two slices of bread in a pan, heat em till they're crispy, flip em, then put the camembert on top so it barely melts, cucumber slices on the other half and om nom nom. since the cheese melts anyway it doesn't really matter if you destroy it.
to properly slice it I use one of these though
roughly 20 years old and still sharper than most other ------- knives.

true, that nasty cheap orange cheddar cheese is everywhere but..
When I lived with my uber crazy landlady, she used to eat expensive cheese in front of the TV, she'd sit down with a large block and a bread knife and eat the whole thing. Only it wasn't expensive because it was fancy, it was expensive because it was the cheapest cheese she could get in the biggest package. The thing was like a brick.
Suffice to say she's currently in a mental asylum and has been happily living there for at least a year now
