Final Frontier Map AsteroidBattle

Post by Xcrist »

Hi Guys
FF-AsteroidBattle is my First map. I have made it because there are no space maps for the mod Final Frontier and i think such a map make this mod more "realistic".

This map would look a whole lot better with a nice skybox. Like the idea though, I might work on some asteroids.

Not everyone can make a skybox, but someone might do it for you if you ask.

I like it dude. I was waiting for someone to take the plunge and make a map such as this. Looks very nice btw.

You did very nice dude. If you would like to add a skybox, try searching google for a tutorial. Sorry for not having better or more info on skyboxes but I have never used them myself. I should learn hehehe.

Or you could use the one I did...

Actully, if you want i can make you new ones. Space ones are acctully relativly easy.

Well i played it and i say: "Good, if pugly map!"

The asteroids look fine, and the metal placements nice. Its all good...exept its one FUGLY map!

Its really dark, makeing a lot of the CORE units hard to see, and the flat texture on the "water" part of the map is downright silly looking. The skybox, or lack of one, blinded me and forced me to go to OTA view mode, witch i hate (i use the FPS camera).

In every SINGLE OTHER WAY this map is great! ITs just ugly!

So just steal a skybox from aGorm (the one on Acid Bridge is really nice...), use some void water tags or something arcan and wird, and remake the newer prettyer map!

@Zombie: I understand what u mean... the map dont looks good if u chose a different perspective, BUT i think its not possible, to make a FF map which is not supposed to be a map for the OTA view, reason:
The asteroids shall look 3D like balls, but in spring you only can make hills and not a real ball, so the asteroids for example will look ugly in every view not the OTA view (ok you can zoom and turn the camera to left and right, but not down or up). Atm, the 3d effect comes only from the texture and in game the asteroids are hilled platforms with an asteroidtexture. So if u chose for example the first person view, you will see that the asteroids arent what they shall be. But i dont see any solution for that.
But you are right with the skybox... dont know if he will make a remake of this map, but i think his next map will have one ;)
To the darkness of the map... FF places in space, so you cant have a lightend map like on earth, ok you can have some gasclouds or so, but i think most maps will stay dark and for me thats not a disadvantage cause so the weaponeffects are better seen :D.

http://taspring.clan-sy.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2639 - these used a few tricks to make them look nice :-)
I hope a couple of these kind of maps will be made (with gravity set to 0.00...01 to make wrekages of battleships and things actually float in the middle of the battlefield).

- There is no water texture. Buildings in space are placed on the water surface and the space texture is below it on the water ground. For my next map i will increase the distance between the water ground and the water surface.
- I think that a skybox looks nice if its replacing the sky(for my next map i will see that i use one THX to aGorm and mufdvr). if u use it for the map ground it looks a little bit odd (i 've seen it in the map iceteroid).
- if u make the asteroids "higher" or more "round" u will probably get problems with FF, because the ships cannot shoot (i have seen that on maps like plains and passes, if the high levels are too different)

Unfortunately the only way to get around capships not firing on heights above them is to raise the cruise altitudes. Unfortunately, this is something Optimus Prime said would lead to other graphical quirkiness

yep and so its not easy to make a space map that looks good in first person. perhaps if u use a mass amount of small asteroids.

Well you could make "fluff" sroids that are fetures? You know, small ones that have next to no LASTING mineral value and there fore will not sustain metal collectors (thats a fancey way of saying you cant buiold on them). Then you can put some "real" steroids that are hills. OR You could only have it buildable on platforms (whitch would look normal with a flat cut off bottom.

Also I was thinking of makeing the PLATFROMS more grey then black, so i can actuatualy see my buildings... or i can choose white as my side's color!

http://taspring.clan-sy.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2639 - these maps looked good from all perspectives because they used the voidwater tag and somehow got rid of the texture under the water and the reflection so that the skybox could be seen beneath the map. And I think he used features to make the bottom half of the asteroids so that it looked whole.

Could we see a test build of TA:FF that doesnt rely on ground totally to build things? It seems odd that everywhere in space that the arm and core fight, there are huge platforms for building units on. That and I dont think platforms are very pretty...... Maybe fi you did somethign that looked mroe like what runecrafter has done with his asteroid base map

Well i remmber my fav map for OTFF! Iceteroids! Massive blocks of ICE flying through space. Huge map, lots of metal and a lode of FUN!

Platfoms should only be AROUND planets...

Also...hehehe... anyone want to make a ridiculessly HUGE Solar System map?

It wont run into the problems of Real Earth maps...if you think that ships are really really big and go really really fast!

I think the "orbital" buildings (the ones you can build everywhere) are a good compromise. I think it wouldnt be so interesting if you can build everything everywhere on the map. Perhaps i will increase the number of orbital buildings for the next version, but right now u are still able to build all factories in space, that can save a lot of space and is an interesting tactic.
